Nasal issues

Hello, doctor: Since I was young, I have enjoyed picking my nose.
Initially, it was a habitual action, but as I grew older, I only did it during my daily cleaning routine.
However, I often like to squeeze and pinch my nose when there’s nothing else going on.
I have never had a record of nosebleeds throughout my life, but I do have a slight allergy.
Recently, I noticed that the tip of my nose hurts, and the pain feels similar to having a pimple, but there is no swelling or nasal discharge; it just hurts when I press on the tip of my nose.
What could be the reason for this? Is it harmful to frequently pinch my nose?

Xiao You, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/04/06

Dr. Jian Huangqi reply Otolaryngology

The nasal tip pain is likely caused by inflammation of the nasal vestibule.
Frequently pinching the nose is not advisable, and it is recommended to see a specialist.
Thank you!

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding your nose pain and the habit of picking or squeezing your nose. It’s great that you’re seeking to understand the underlying causes of your discomfort, as well as the potential impact of your habits.

First, let’s address the pain you’re experiencing at the tip of your nose. The sensation you describe—similar to a pimple but without swelling or nasal discharge—could be attributed to several factors. One possibility is that your frequent touching or squeezing of your nose may have led to irritation of the skin or the underlying tissues. The skin on the nose is sensitive, and excessive manipulation can cause inflammation or even micro-trauma, leading to discomfort.

Additionally, since you mentioned having a history of nasal allergies, it’s worth considering that allergic reactions can cause localized inflammation, which might contribute to the pain you’re feeling. Allergies can lead to increased sensitivity in the nasal area, making it more prone to discomfort when touched or manipulated.

Another potential cause of your nose pain could be related to the nasal passages themselves. Chronic nasal congestion or inflammation, often associated with allergies, can lead to pressure and discomfort in the nasal area. Even if you’re not experiencing a runny nose or significant swelling, the underlying inflammation can still cause pain.

Regarding your habit of picking or squeezing your nose, it’s important to recognize that while it may seem harmless, it can lead to various issues. Frequent nose-picking can introduce bacteria from your fingers into your nasal passages, increasing the risk of infections. Additionally, it can cause damage to the delicate skin inside your nose, leading to irritation or even nosebleeds over time, even if you haven’t experienced them yet.

To address your concerns, here are some recommendations:
1. Limit Nose Manipulation: Try to reduce the frequency of touching or squeezing your nose. If you find it difficult to stop, consider finding alternative ways to keep your hands busy, such as using a stress ball or fidget toy.

2. Maintain Nasal Hygiene: If you have allergies, managing them effectively can help reduce nasal irritation. Consider using saline nasal sprays to keep your nasal passages moist and clear of irritants.

3. Consult a Healthcare Professional: If the pain persists or worsens, it would be wise to consult an ear, nose, and throat (ENT) specialist. They can perform a thorough examination to rule out any underlying conditions, such as infections or structural issues.

4. Practice Good Hygiene: Always wash your hands before touching your face, especially your nose, to minimize the risk of introducing bacteria.

5. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any other symptoms that may arise, such as increased nasal congestion, discharge, or changes in the pain. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

In conclusion, while your habit of picking or squeezing your nose may seem benign, it can lead to discomfort and potential complications. By being mindful of this habit and taking steps to manage your nasal health, you can help alleviate the pain you’re experiencing. If the issue continues, don’t hesitate to seek professional advice for a more tailored approach to your situation. Take care!
