Yellow-green discharge?
Hello Doctor: Since the end of January this year, possibly due to staying up late and high stress, I have been experiencing a small amount of yellow-green, thick, sticky discharge.
It sticks to the toilet paper when I wipe after using the restroom.
The amount is very small and occasionally causes some itching, but there is no fishy or other unusual odor.
Since I have not engaged in sexual intercourse, I still feel anxious about visiting a gynecologist.
Is this situation serious? If I just maintain cleanliness, will it gradually improve? Thank you for your response.
Weiwei, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/04/08
Dr. Huang Jianxun reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dear Weiwei: Staying up late can weaken your immune system, and vaginal bacteria may take the opportunity to cause an infection.
If the condition persists without improvement, you should seek treatment.
Wishing you good health, Dr.
Huang Jianxun.

The presence of yellow-green discharge can be concerning, and it’s important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical help. Based on your description, it seems you have been experiencing this discharge since the end of January, which coincides with a period of increased stress and possibly irregular sleep patterns.
Firstly, let’s explore the potential causes of yellow-green discharge. This type of discharge can be influenced by several factors, including:
1. Infection: One of the most common causes of abnormal discharge is an infection. This could be a bacterial infection, such as bacterial vaginosis, or a sexually transmitted infection (STI) like trichomoniasis. Even though you mentioned that you have not engaged in sexual activity, infections can occur without sexual contact, especially if there are changes in the vaginal flora.
2. Hormonal Changes: Fluctuations in hormones, which can be influenced by stress, diet, or menstrual cycles, can also lead to changes in vaginal discharge. Stress, in particular, can affect your hormonal balance and may lead to increased production of certain types of discharge.
3. Diet and Hydration: Your diet can significantly impact the color and consistency of your discharge. A diet low in hydration or high in certain foods may lead to changes in the discharge.
4. Other Medical Conditions: Conditions such as pelvic inflammatory disease (PID) or other gynecological issues can also cause abnormal discharge.
Given that your discharge is described as sticky and yellow-green, it is advisable to monitor it closely. If you notice any additional symptoms such as itching, burning, or an unusual odor, it would be prudent to seek medical attention. While you mentioned that the discharge does not have a fishy smell, which is often associated with bacterial vaginosis, any persistent changes should not be ignored.
In terms of hygiene, maintaining cleanliness is essential, but it is also important to avoid douching or using scented products in the vaginal area, as these can disrupt the natural balance of bacteria and potentially worsen the situation.
As for whether this condition will improve on its own, it is difficult to predict. Some cases of mild discharge may resolve with improved hygiene and reduced stress, while others may require medical intervention. If the discharge persists for more than a few weeks, or if you experience any discomfort, it would be wise to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a gynecologist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including a pelvic exam and lab tests, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms.
In summary, while yellow-green discharge can sometimes be benign, it is essential to pay attention to your body and seek medical advice if the situation does not improve or if additional symptoms arise. Taking proactive steps towards your health, including managing stress and maintaining a balanced diet, can also be beneficial.
