Can I take over-the-counter cold medications while on birth control pills?
Hello Doctor, I have been taking oral contraceptives since the end of January, and I am currently in my fourth cycle, which means I have been on them for over three months.
During this time, I have not used condoms or tracked my fertile or non-fertile days, and everything has been normal except for some initial discomfort, which has since resolved.
The contraceptive effectiveness is almost 100%.
However, tonight I am feeling a bit unwell with dizziness and sneezing, likely due to catching a cold last night.
I took a pack of cold medicine that I had from before.
After taking it, I remembered the question of whether it is safe to take cold medicine while on birth control! I took the cold medicine at 8:30 PM and then took my birth control pill at 10:40 PM, which was more than two hours later.
I am worried because I have heard that taking other medications during the use of birth control pills might reduce their effectiveness.
I specifically noted the names of the medications I took: Cleocin (which seems to be a capsule, as there are three pills and the prescription indicates three tablets, but only one is a capsule, so I think it must be this one), Voren (tablet), Lysozen (tablet), and Zyrtec (tablet).
Doctor, I am quite anxious and hope you can respond to me as soon as possible.
Thank you!

Generally speaking, taking hormone-containing medications may reduce the effectiveness of contraception; however, the cold medications you are taking do not have any impact, so there is no need to worry.

More Info
When it comes to taking cold medicine while on birth control pills, it’s understandable to have concerns about potential interactions and the effectiveness of your contraceptive method. Let’s break this down.
First and foremost, most over-the-counter cold medications do not interfere with the effectiveness of birth control pills. The primary concern with birth control pills is their interaction with certain antibiotics and some other medications, which can indeed reduce their effectiveness. However, the medications you mentioned—Cleocin (clindamycin), Voren (diclofenac), Lysozen (lysozyme), and Zyrtec (cetirizine)—are not known to have any significant interactions with hormonal contraceptives.
Cleocin (clindamycin) is an antibiotic that is generally not associated with reducing the effectiveness of birth control pills. However, it’s always good to consult with your healthcare provider if you are prescribed antibiotics, as some, like rifampin, can lower the effectiveness of hormonal contraceptives.
Voren (diclofenac) is a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID) used to relieve pain and inflammation. It does not affect the efficacy of birth control pills.
Lysozen (lysozyme) is an enzyme that has antibacterial properties and is often used in various formulations for its soothing effects. It does not interact with birth control pills.
Zyrtec (cetirizine) is an antihistamine used to relieve allergy symptoms. It is also safe to use with birth control pills and does not affect their effectiveness.
In summary, based on the medications you mentioned, you should not worry about a decrease in the effectiveness of your birth control pills due to taking these cold medications. However, it’s always a good practice to read the labels of any medication and consult with your healthcare provider or pharmacist if you have any doubts.
Additionally, if you experience any unusual symptoms or side effects after taking any medication, it’s important to reach out to your healthcare provider for advice. They can provide personalized guidance based on your health history and current medications.
Lastly, if you find yourself frequently needing cold medications, consider discussing preventive measures with your healthcare provider, such as vaccinations or lifestyle changes that may help reduce the frequency of colds.
In conclusion, you can take the cold medications you listed while on birth control pills without worrying about compromising their effectiveness. Always keep an open line of communication with your healthcare provider regarding any medications you are taking, especially when you are on hormonal contraceptives.
