Chills followed by fever?
Hello, I would like to ask about a situation where there are no cold symptoms like coughing or runny nose, but suddenly I feel chills, as if the cold is coming from within my body.
I am shivering and experiencing full-body aches and weakness.
After more than an hour, I develop a fever, and this has happened twice.
What could be the issue? Thank you.

Hello! Thank you for your question regarding the symptoms of chills followed by fever without any accompanying cold symptoms like cough or runny nose. Your experience of feeling cold, shivering, and then transitioning to a fever can be quite concerning, and it's important to understand what might be happening in your body.
The symptoms you describe—chills, body aches, weakness, and subsequent fever—can be indicative of several underlying conditions. One common explanation for this pattern is the body's immune response to an infection. When the body detects an infection, it can trigger a series of responses, including the release of pyrogens (substances that induce fever) and the activation of the immune system. This can lead to chills as your body attempts to raise its temperature to fight off the infection.
Infections can be caused by various pathogens, including viruses, bacteria, or even fungi. It's worth noting that not all infections present with typical respiratory symptoms. For instance, a urinary tract infection (UTI) or a gastrointestinal infection can sometimes manifest with fever and chills without respiratory symptoms. Additionally, conditions such as influenza or other viral infections can also present atypically, especially in the early stages.
Another possibility to consider is the presence of an inflammatory condition. Autoimmune diseases, for example, can cause systemic symptoms like fever and chills due to inflammation in the body. Given your history of immune system disorders, such as suspected adult Still's disease, it's crucial to monitor these symptoms closely. Flare-ups of autoimmune conditions can lead to similar symptoms, including fever and chills, as the body reacts to inflammation.
Moreover, if you have recently experienced any exposure to infections or have been in close contact with individuals who are ill, this could also explain your symptoms. The immune system may be reacting to a latent infection or a new exposure, leading to the chills and fever.
Given the recurrence of these symptoms, it is advisable to seek medical attention. A healthcare professional can perform a thorough evaluation, including a physical examination and possibly laboratory tests, to determine the underlying cause of your symptoms. Blood tests can help assess for signs of infection or inflammation, and other diagnostic tests may be warranted based on your clinical presentation.
In the meantime, it's essential to take care of yourself. Ensure you stay hydrated, rest adequately, and monitor your symptoms. If you experience any worsening of symptoms, such as difficulty breathing, persistent high fever, or severe weakness, seek immediate medical attention.
In summary, while chills followed by fever can be caused by various factors, including infections and inflammatory conditions, it's crucial to consult with a healthcare provider for an accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Your health and well-being are paramount, and timely medical intervention can help address any underlying issues effectively. Thank you for reaching out, and I hope you find relief soon!
