Numbness and tingling in the hand after surgery?
A week ago, I developed two hard lumps that seem to be tumors on the inner side of my upper arm biceps.
I went to the hospital, and the doctor said that surgery would be the best way to determine what kind of tumor it is.
I underwent an outpatient minor surgery right away, and it seemed that the procedure was performed by a resident doctor, whose technique felt quite inexperienced.
Currently, the wound is not very painful, but the muscles on the inner side of my elbow and my wrist feel numb and tingly when I extend my arm too straight! Additionally, the muscle around my elbow is slightly swollen and also feels numb! I am worried that the doctor might have cut some nerves or something similar, which could cause unexpected damage to my arm! Please help me with this concern! Thank you very much!

There are many reasons for experiencing tingling and numbness in the hand after surgery.
Regarding your issue, it is recommended to visit an outpatient clinic for further examination.
If possible, please bring the pathology report of the biopsy to determine whether the tissue type is benign or malignant, as this will allow for a more thorough evaluation.

More Info
Post-surgery numbness and tingling in the arm can be concerning, especially after a procedure involving the biceps or surrounding tissues. Based on your description, it seems that you underwent a minor surgical procedure to remove or biopsy two hard lumps on the inner side of your upper arm. While it’s understandable to be worried about potential nerve damage, let’s break down what you might be experiencing and what you should know.
Understanding Post-Surgical Symptoms
1. Numbness and Tingling: These sensations can occur after surgery for several reasons. The most common causes include:
- Swelling: Post-operative swelling can compress nearby nerves, leading to sensations of numbness or tingling.
- Nerve Irritation: During surgery, even if the surgeon is careful, nearby nerves can be irritated or temporarily affected, resulting in these sensations.
- Positioning During Surgery: If your arm was positioned in a way that put pressure on nerves, this could lead to temporary numbness or tingling.
2. Muscle Tightness and Swelling: The tightness and swelling you’re experiencing in the elbow area may be due to:
- Inflammation: The body’s natural response to surgery includes inflammation, which can cause swelling and discomfort.
- Muscle Guarding: After surgery, muscles may tighten as a protective mechanism, which can lead to stiffness and discomfort.
When to Be Concerned
While some numbness and tingling can be normal after surgery, you should monitor your symptoms closely. Here are some signs that warrant immediate medical attention:
- Persistent or Worsening Symptoms: If the numbness or tingling does not improve over the next few days or worsens, it’s important to consult your surgeon.
- Loss of Function: If you notice weakness in your arm or difficulty moving your fingers, this could indicate a more serious issue.
- Severe Pain: If you experience significant pain that is not relieved by over-the-counter medications, you should seek medical advice.
Recommendations for Recovery
1. Follow-Up Appointment: It’s crucial to have a follow-up appointment with your surgeon or healthcare provider. They can assess your symptoms, check for any complications, and provide guidance on your recovery.
2. Rest and Elevation: Keep your arm elevated to help reduce swelling. Rest is essential for healing, so avoid strenuous activities that could exacerbate your symptoms.
3. Gentle Range of Motion Exercises: Once cleared by your doctor, gentle stretching and range of motion exercises can help improve mobility and reduce stiffness. However, avoid any movements that cause pain.
4. Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the swollen area can help reduce inflammation and numbness. Just be sure to wrap ice in a cloth to avoid direct contact with the skin.
5. Pain Management: Over-the-counter pain relievers like ibuprofen or acetaminophen can help manage discomfort. Always follow your doctor’s recommendations regarding medication.
Conclusion
In summary, while numbness and tingling after surgery can be concerning, they are not uncommon. It’s essential to monitor your symptoms and communicate with your healthcare provider about any changes. With proper care and attention, most post-surgical symptoms improve over time. Remember, your health and recovery are paramount, so don’t hesitate to reach out for help if you have any concerns. Wishing you a smooth recovery!
