Post-Surgery Urgency: Frequent Urination After Procedure - Surgery

I would like to ask a question?

Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask about my girlfriend.
After we have intercourse, which is after ejaculation, she feels the urge to urinate about ten minutes later.
Sometimes she goes to the bathroom twice within half an hour, and this happens almost every time.
What could be the reason for this?

Yaho, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/08/26

Dr. Huang Zhihui reply Surgery

Hello, your issue is related to the involvement of sympathetic and parasympathetic nerve stimulation during erection.
These nerves can also stimulate the bladder, leading to bladder instability and causing frequent urination for 1-2 hours, which is more pronounced in younger individuals.
Note: If you feel uncomfortable, applying a local warm compress to the penis after ejaculation may help alleviate this phenomenon.
This response is provided on behalf of Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of the Urology Department at Taitung Hospital, Ministry of Health and Welfare.

Post-surgery urinary urgency, especially after procedures involving the pelvic region, can be a common concern. It is essential to understand that various factors can contribute to this phenomenon, particularly after surgical interventions.
Firstly, the anatomy of the urinary tract and its relationship to surrounding structures can be affected by surgery. If your girlfriend underwent a procedure that involved the bladder, urethra, or any pelvic organs, it is possible that the surgery has temporarily altered the normal function of these structures. Surgical trauma can lead to inflammation, which may increase sensitivity in the bladder and result in a heightened urge to urinate. This is often referred to as "post-operative bladder irritability."
Secondly, the psychological aspect should not be overlooked. Surgery can be a stressful experience, and anxiety can exacerbate urinary urgency. The body’s response to stress can lead to increased muscle tension, which may affect bladder control. Additionally, if your girlfriend is experiencing any discomfort or pain post-surgery, this could also contribute to a heightened awareness of her need to urinate.

Another important consideration is the potential for urinary tract infections (UTIs), which can occur after surgery, particularly if a catheter was used during the procedure. UTIs can cause symptoms such as increased frequency of urination, urgency, and discomfort. If your girlfriend is experiencing any burning sensation while urinating or if there is any unusual odor or color in her urine, it would be advisable for her to consult her healthcare provider for a urine analysis.

Moreover, the use of certain medications post-surgery can also influence urinary patterns. Some pain medications, particularly opioids, can cause urinary retention, while others may irritate the bladder. If your girlfriend is on any new medications, it would be worth discussing these with her doctor to see if they could be contributing to her symptoms.

In terms of management, it is crucial for your girlfriend to communicate her symptoms to her healthcare provider. They may recommend a bladder diary to track her urinary patterns, which can help identify any specific triggers or patterns. Behavioral techniques, such as bladder training, may also be beneficial. This involves gradually increasing the time between urinations to help retrain the bladder.

In conclusion, frequent urination after surgery can be attributed to several factors, including surgical trauma, inflammation, psychological stress, potential infections, and medication side effects. It is essential for your girlfriend to follow up with her healthcare provider to discuss her symptoms and receive appropriate evaluation and management. Understanding the underlying causes can help alleviate her concerns and improve her quality of life post-surgery.
