Red spots on the glans?
I sometimes have small red spots on my glans, which can increase the next day but disappear after a few days.
This has been intermittent.
The last time I saw a doctor, I was prescribed medication and ointment.
However, after stopping the medication, the symptoms returned after about a week.
What could be the issue?
A He, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/08/28
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
A-He: Hello, most cases are caused by infections, but sometimes they can be triggered by cleaning agents (such as soap).
I recommend using cold water for cleaning and avoiding cleaning products like soap.
If you experience a rash, you can apply some baby oil after cleaning to reduce discomfort and minimize the risk of infection.

More Info
Understanding red spots on the glans (the head of the penis) can be concerning, and it's important to approach this issue with a clear understanding of potential causes and treatments. The presence of small red spots that appear intermittently and then disappear can be attributed to several factors, including infections, allergic reactions, skin conditions, or other underlying health issues.
Common Causes of Red Spots on the Glans
1. Infections:
- Bacterial Infections: Conditions such as balanitis, which is inflammation of the glans, can be caused by bacterial infections. Symptoms may include redness, swelling, and discharge.
- Fungal Infections: Yeast infections, often caused by Candida, can lead to red spots and irritation. This is more common in individuals with diabetes or those who are immunocompromised.
- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): Certain STIs, like herpes or syphilis, can present with red spots or sores on the glans.
2. Allergic Reactions:
- Contact dermatitis can occur due to sensitivity to soaps, lotions, or latex from condoms. This can cause localized redness and irritation.
3. Skin Conditions:
- Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also affect the genital area, leading to red patches or spots.
4. Irritation:
- Friction from sexual activity or tight clothing can cause irritation and result in red spots.
5. Other Medical Conditions:
- Conditions like lichen planus or lichen sclerosus can cause changes in the skin of the glans, leading to red spots or lesions.
Treatment Options
The treatment for red spots on the glans largely depends on the underlying cause. Here are some general approaches:
1. Topical Treatments:
- If a bacterial or fungal infection is diagnosed, your doctor may prescribe topical antibiotics or antifungal creams. It's crucial to complete the full course of treatment even if symptoms improve.
2. Oral Medications:
- In cases of severe infections or persistent symptoms, oral medications may be necessary.
3. Avoid Irritants:
- If the cause is related to an allergic reaction or irritation, identifying and avoiding the irritant is essential. This may involve changing soaps, avoiding certain fabrics, or using hypoallergenic products.
4. Good Hygiene:
- Maintaining proper hygiene can help prevent infections. Gently washing the area with mild soap and water and ensuring it is dry can reduce the risk of irritation and infection.
5. Follow-Up Care:
- Since your symptoms recur after stopping medication, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may need to reassess your condition, possibly perform tests, or consider alternative treatments.
When to Seek Medical Attention
If you experience any of the following symptoms, it is important to seek medical attention promptly:
- Persistent or worsening red spots
- Pain, itching, or burning sensations
- Discharge from the glans
- Fever or systemic symptoms
Conclusion
Red spots on the glans can arise from various causes, and understanding the underlying issue is key to effective treatment. If your symptoms persist despite treatment, or if you have concerns about the nature of the spots, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional for a thorough evaluation and tailored treatment plan. Remember, early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and peace of mind.
