Soft Bumps on the Penis: Possible Causes and Concerns - Urology

There are four flesh-colored protrusions located on the underside of the penis near the glans, within the foreskin?

Hello, doctor! I've actually had this issue for about two to three years (during which I have had a steady partner).
One time, my girlfriend noticed this problem while performing oral sex, and that's when I became aware of it.
Could it be genital warts? There are flesh-colored growths located beneath the penis, inside the foreskin—currently, there are four of them (varying in size and shape).
When I press on them with my finger, they move around a little (but not much) and feel soft.
They are not painful or itchy.
If I pull the foreskin to the sides, they appear to look like blisters.
I would like to know if this could be genital warts or what might be causing this! I'm feeling a lot of stress about it and hope the doctor can provide some insight.
Thank you!

Don't worry! It doesn't look like genital warts! I suggest you go to the hospital and have a urologist examine it in person.

When it comes to soft bumps on the penis, particularly those that are movable, soft, and painless, there are several potential causes to consider. Given your description of the bumps being flesh-colored, located under the foreskin, and not causing any discomfort, it’s essential to explore the possibilities while also addressing your concerns about sexually transmitted infections (STIs) like genital warts (caused by the human papillomavirus, or HPV).

1. Pearly Penile Papules: One common benign condition that can present as small, soft bumps on the penis is pearly penile papules. These are typically located around the corona of the glans (the head of the penis) and are harmless. They are a normal anatomical variation and do not require treatment unless they cause psychological distress.

2. Sebaceous Cysts: Another possibility is sebaceous cysts, which are small, soft lumps that can occur anywhere on the body, including the genital area. These cysts are filled with sebum (oil) and are generally harmless. They can sometimes be mistaken for other conditions but are not typically associated with pain or discomfort.

3. Genital Warts: Your concern about genital warts is valid, especially since they can appear as soft, flesh-colored bumps. Genital warts can vary in size and shape and may appear in clusters. They are caused by certain strains of HPV and can be transmitted through sexual contact. If the bumps are indeed warts, they may require treatment to reduce their appearance and prevent transmission.

4. Other Conditions: Other potential causes for soft bumps could include molluscum contagiosum (a viral infection that causes small, raised, pearl-like bumps) or fibromas (benign tumors). Each of these conditions has distinct characteristics and may require different approaches to diagnosis and treatment.

Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is crucial to consult a healthcare provider, preferably a urologist or dermatologist, for an accurate diagnosis. They can perform a physical examination and may recommend further testing, such as a biopsy, if there is any uncertainty about the nature of the bumps.

- Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it’s natural to search for answers online, self-diagnosis can lead to unnecessary anxiety. A professional evaluation will provide clarity and peace of mind.

- Discuss Sexual Health: Since you mentioned having a fixed partner, it’s also important to discuss sexual health openly with your partner. If there is any concern about STIs, both partners should consider getting tested.

- Mental Health Consideration: The stress and anxiety you’re experiencing are valid. It’s essential to address these feelings, whether through counseling or support groups, as they can significantly impact your overall well-being.

Conclusion:
Soft bumps on the penis can arise from various benign conditions, but they can also indicate an STI like genital warts. Given the duration of your concern and the characteristics of the bumps, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is the best course of action. They will provide you with the necessary information and treatment options, alleviating your worries and ensuring your sexual health is managed appropriately. Remember, early intervention and open communication with your healthcare provider are key to addressing any health concerns effectively.
