Do anti-inflammatory drugs and muscle relaxants affect the fetus?

I visited the clinic on August 8th due to a stiff neck and received an injection of a muscle relaxant, along with a prescription for anti-inflammatory medication.
However, I only took 2 packs of the anti-inflammatory medication and did not continue.
On August 22nd, I discovered that I am 5 weeks pregnant.
I am concerned about whether this will affect the embryo.
The medications prescribed by the doctor and their total amounts are as follows: WEREN ENTERIC-MICROENCAPSULE 9.00 TAB, danzen 9.00 TAB, tagamel 1 (200) 9.00, KETO 2 CC 1.50.
Thank you, doctor, for your response!

Dr. Zhuang Zhijian reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello, thank you for your question.
I would like to address your inquiry and provide the following advice: If you took medication on August 8th, any potential effects on the fetus would typically result in a miscarriage, and the fetus would not continue to develop.
It would not cause fetal malformations.

When it comes to the use of muscle relaxants and anti-inflammatory medications during pregnancy, it is essential to consider the potential effects on fetal development. Based on the information provided, you received a muscle relaxant injection and were prescribed anti-inflammatory medication shortly before discovering your pregnancy.
Firstly, the timing of medication use is crucial. You mentioned that you received treatment on August 8 and confirmed your pregnancy on August 22, which means that the embryo was in its early stages of development during the time you were taking these medications. Generally, the first trimester is a critical period for fetal development, as this is when major organs and systems are forming.

Muscle relaxants, such as the one you received, can vary in their safety profiles during pregnancy. Some muscle relaxants are considered relatively safe, while others may pose risks. For instance, medications like methocarbamol and cyclobenzaprine are sometimes prescribed, but their safety in pregnancy has not been well established. It is essential to consult with your healthcare provider regarding the specific muscle relaxant you received to understand its safety profile during pregnancy.

As for anti-inflammatory medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) like ibuprofen and naproxen are generally advised against during pregnancy, especially in the third trimester, due to potential risks such as premature closure of the ductus arteriosus in the fetus. However, some studies suggest that short-term use of certain NSAIDs in the first trimester may not significantly increase the risk of congenital anomalies. The specific anti-inflammatory medication you were prescribed should be evaluated for its safety during pregnancy.

Regarding the medications you listed (WEREN ENTERIC-MICROENCAPSU, danzen, Tagamel, and KETO), it is important to note that the safety of these medications during pregnancy can vary. For example, Tagamet (cimetidine) is a histamine H2-receptor antagonist used to treat stomach issues and is generally considered safe in pregnancy. However, the safety of the other medications should be assessed based on their specific ingredients and the available research.

In summary, while there is a possibility that the medications you took could have some impact on fetal development, the risk may be low, especially if the medications were used for a short duration and if they are considered safe during pregnancy. It is crucial to have an open discussion with your healthcare provider about your concerns and the specific medications you were prescribed. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and the details of your pregnancy.

If you experience any unusual symptoms or have concerns about your pregnancy, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Regular prenatal check-ups are essential for monitoring the health of both you and your developing baby. Your healthcare provider can also guide you on any necessary lifestyle changes or alternative treatments that may be safer during pregnancy.
