Testosterone?
Hello, doctor.
Could you please tell me which medications contain testosterone? If I go to the hospital, can I ask the doctor to prescribe testosterone medication? I have discovered that my testosterone levels are low, and I would like to supplement it.
Is it true that low testosterone can lead to insufficient ejaculation, decreased libido, and a smaller penis size? What foods or health supplements can help with this? Additionally, I found that there are testosterone gels available online; are they really effective? Thank you, doctor.
Mr. Lin, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/09/04
Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology
Mr.
Lin: Hello, general high testosterone levels are mostly associated with adults and carry a risk of carcinogenicity.
Therefore, aside from a very limited number of medications that have been proven safe by the FDA, most carry a risk of cancer.
Consequently, unless secondary sexual characteristics are not pronounced and there is a need to stimulate male traits such as pubic hair, Adam's apple, and penile development through male hormones, most medical institutions will not provide such medications.
Currently, there are indeed gel formulations available that are quite convenient to use; however, whether they are associated with cancer remains to be verified.
(As they have not been on the market for long, they are still under observation, and there have been no reports of carcinogenicity so far.) This is a response from Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology at Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

More Info
Testosterone is a crucial hormone in the human body, primarily associated with male sexual development and function, but it also plays significant roles in various bodily functions for both men and women. Low testosterone levels, or hypogonadism, can lead to several health issues, including reduced libido, erectile dysfunction, fatigue, and even changes in mood.
Medications Containing Testosterone
There are several medications available that contain testosterone or are designed to boost testosterone levels. These include:
1. Testosterone Cypionate: This is a commonly prescribed injectable form of testosterone. It is often used in testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) for men with low testosterone levels.
2. Testosterone Enanthate: Another injectable form, similar to cypionate, used for TRT.
3. Testosterone Undecanoate: This is available in both injectable and oral forms and is used for testosterone replacement.
4. Transdermal Testosterone Gels: Products like AndroGel and Testim are applied to the skin and allow testosterone to be absorbed into the bloodstream.
5. Testosterone Patches: These are applied to the skin and release testosterone over time.
6. Pellets: Testosterone pellets can be implanted under the skin and release testosterone over several months.
Seeking Treatment
If you suspect you have low testosterone levels, it is essential to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform blood tests to measure your testosterone levels and determine if treatment is necessary. If low testosterone is confirmed, your doctor can prescribe appropriate testosterone replacement therapy based on your individual needs.
Effects of Low Testosterone
Low testosterone levels can indeed lead to various symptoms, including:
- Decreased Libido: A significant drop in sexual desire.
- Erectile Dysfunction: Difficulty achieving or maintaining an erection.
- Reduced Semen Volume: This can affect ejaculation.
- Fatigue and Depression: Low energy levels and mood changes.
- Changes in Body Composition: Increased body fat and decreased muscle mass.
While low testosterone can contribute to these issues, it is essential to note that other factors, such as psychological conditions, lifestyle choices, and other medical conditions, can also play a role.
Dietary and Supplementary Support
Certain foods and supplements may help support testosterone levels naturally. These include:
- Zinc-Rich Foods: Foods like oysters, beef, and pumpkin seeds are high in zinc, which is essential for testosterone production.
- Vitamin D: Sun exposure and foods like fatty fish can help maintain adequate vitamin D levels, which is linked to testosterone production.
- Healthy Fats: Incorporating healthy fats from sources like avocados, nuts, and olive oil can support hormone production.
- Exercise: Regular physical activity, particularly strength training, can help boost testosterone levels.
Testosterone Gels and Their Effectiveness
Testosterone gels, such as AndroGel, are effective for many individuals with low testosterone. They provide a convenient way to deliver testosterone without the need for injections. The effectiveness of these gels can vary from person to person, and it is crucial to follow the application instructions carefully to ensure optimal absorption and minimize the risk of transferring testosterone to others through skin contact.
Conclusion
In summary, if you suspect low testosterone levels, consult a healthcare provider for evaluation and potential treatment options. Testosterone replacement therapy can be effective in alleviating symptoms associated with low testosterone. Additionally, lifestyle changes, including diet and exercise, can support overall hormonal health. Always discuss any concerns or treatment options with your healthcare provider to ensure a safe and effective approach to managing your health.
