Itching at the front of the entire genital area?
Hello Doctor: My question is that the entire front of my genital area is itchy (including the foreskin and glans), and I feel that my glans is slightly red, swollen, and itchy.
There are also some small blisters near the urethral opening.
This condition has lasted for about 2 to 3 days, and I had sexual intercourse two days before noticing these symptoms (with a steady partner for over three years).
What possible conditions could I be experiencing? Thank you!
Xiao K, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/09/10
Dr. Li Yilun reply Urology
If there has been a history of sexual intercourse and there are blister-like itchy rashes on the genitals, the common diagnosis is genital herpes.
If there is also urethral pain and discharge, urethritis should be considered.
It is recommended to promptly consult a urologist for an examination and early treatment.

More Info
Itchy genital symptoms can be quite concerning and uncomfortable, and they can arise from a variety of causes. Based on your description of symptoms, including itching, redness, swelling of the glans (the head of the penis), and the presence of small blisters near the urinary opening, there are several potential conditions that could be responsible for your symptoms.
1. Infections: One of the most common causes of genital itching and irritation is an infection. This could be a sexually transmitted infection (STI) such as herpes simplex virus (HSV), which can cause painful blisters and sores, or candidiasis (yeast infection), which can lead to itching and redness. Bacterial infections, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans), can also occur, especially if there is poor hygiene or if the area is moist.
2. Allergic Reactions or Irritation: Sometimes, irritation can be caused by contact dermatitis, which is an allergic reaction to soaps, detergents, or even latex in condoms. If you have recently changed any products that come into contact with your genital area, this could be a potential cause.
3. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can also affect the genital area, leading to itching and redness. These conditions are often chronic and can flare up due to various triggers.
4. Fungal Infections: Tinea cruris, commonly known as jock itch, is a fungal infection that can cause itching and redness in the groin area. This is more common in warm, moist environments and can be exacerbated by tight clothing.
5. Other Causes: Other potential causes could include lichen sclerosus, a chronic skin condition that can cause white patches and itching, or even a reaction to medications or supplements.
Given that you have had sexual intercourse shortly before the onset of your symptoms, it is particularly important to consider STIs. Herpes, for example, can present with itching and painful blisters and is often accompanied by flu-like symptoms.
Recommendations:
- Seek Medical Attention: It is crucial to consult a healthcare provider for a proper diagnosis. They may perform a physical examination and possibly take swabs or samples to identify any infections.
- Avoid Irritants: In the meantime, avoid using any new soaps, lotions, or other products in the genital area that could potentially irritate the skin.
- Practice Safe Sex: If you suspect an STI, it is important to refrain from sexual activity until you have been evaluated and treated. Inform your partner as well, so they can also seek evaluation.
- Maintain Hygiene: Keep the area clean and dry, as moisture can exacerbate fungal infections and irritations.
In conclusion, while there are several potential causes for your symptoms, a healthcare professional is best suited to provide a definitive diagnosis and appropriate treatment. Early intervention can help prevent complications and ensure a quicker resolution of your symptoms.
