Coughing issues?

Hello, I am currently 29 weeks pregnant.
Every time I catch a cold and have a sore throat, I start to cough (dry cough), and it usually takes at least three months to resolve.
I previously asked a doctor, who said I have allergic cough, but this time it coincided with my pregnancy.
It started with a sore throat, and I received medication from my obstetrician, but now I only have the cough.
I know that the medication isn't helping, but the doctor mentioned that pregnant women have weaker immune systems, so I started taking the cough medicine prescribed by my obstetrician.
However, I have been coughing for a month and a half now, and there has been no improvement.
Besides drinking warm water, what other remedies are available? For the past four years, I have experienced this condition (dry cough, lasting over three months each time), and I have also taken traditional Chinese medicine to adjust my body.
Therefore, I would like to know if there are any other methods to treat my cough besides warm water.
I am really worried about harming my baby.
What should I do, doctor? My due date is February 7, and I am concerned about still coughing by then.
(The dry cough feels like there is a persistent urge to cough, rather than an itch in the throat.)

Dr. Peng Peilun reply Traditional Chinese Medicine

There are many herbal medicines in traditional Chinese medicine that can safely treat coughs.
You can consult a qualified TCM practitioner for prescriptions and treatment.
Don't worry, as excessive coughing can lead to uterine contractions, which is not good.

Managing a persistent cough during pregnancy can be challenging, especially when you are concerned about the health of your baby. As you are currently 29 weeks pregnant and experiencing a dry cough that has persisted for over a month, it is important to address both the symptoms and any potential impacts on your pregnancy.

Firstly, it is essential to understand that a persistent cough during pregnancy can be caused by various factors, including allergies, respiratory infections, or even acid reflux. Given that you have a history of allergic cough, it is possible that your current symptoms are exacerbated by environmental allergens or irritants. Pregnant women often experience heightened sensitivity to allergens due to hormonal changes, which can lead to increased mucus production and coughing.

Here are some tips and remedies that may help alleviate your cough:
1. Stay Hydrated: You mentioned that you are already drinking warm water, which is excellent. Staying hydrated helps thin mucus and soothe the throat. Consider herbal teas (without caffeine) or warm broths, which can also provide comfort.

2. Humidify the Air: Using a humidifier in your home can add moisture to the air, which may help soothe your throat and reduce coughing. Make sure to clean the humidifier regularly to prevent mold and bacteria growth.

3. Saline Nasal Spray: If your cough is related to nasal congestion, using a saline nasal spray can help clear your nasal passages and reduce post-nasal drip, which often triggers coughing.

4. Honey and Lemon: Mixing honey with warm water and lemon can be soothing for a sore throat and may help reduce coughing. Honey is known for its natural cough-suppressing properties. However, avoid giving honey to infants under one year old.

5. Avoid Irritants: Stay away from smoke, strong perfumes, and other irritants that can exacerbate your cough. If you have allergies, try to identify and minimize exposure to allergens.

6. Elevate Your Head While Sleeping: If your cough worsens at night, try sleeping with your head elevated. This can help reduce coughing by preventing mucus from pooling in your throat.

7. Consult Your Doctor: Since you have been prescribed cough medication by your obstetrician, it is crucial to follow their guidance. If the medication is not helping, or if you have concerns about its safety, discuss alternative treatments with your healthcare provider. They may recommend a different medication that is safe during pregnancy or suggest further evaluation to determine the underlying cause of your cough.

8. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of your symptoms, including any changes in the nature of your cough, the presence of fever, or any other concerning signs. If your cough persists or worsens, or if you experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, it is important to seek medical attention promptly.

9. Consider Allergy Testing: If you suspect that allergies are contributing to your cough, discuss the possibility of allergy testing with your healthcare provider. Identifying specific allergens can help you avoid triggers and manage your symptoms more effectively.

10. Rest and Relaxation: Ensure you are getting enough rest, as fatigue can weaken your immune system and prolong recovery. Stress management techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or prenatal yoga can also be beneficial.

In summary, while a persistent cough during pregnancy can be concerning, there are several strategies you can employ to manage your symptoms. Always prioritize communication with your healthcare provider to ensure that any treatments you consider are safe for you and your baby. Your health and the health of your baby are paramount, and with the right approach, you can find relief from your cough while minimizing any potential risks.
