Can I Still Get Pregnant After Ectopic Pregnancy and Surgery? - Obstetrics and Gynecology

Could you please clarify your question regarding pregnancy?

Hello doctor, I would like to ask about my situation.
I previously had an ectopic pregnancy with significant intra-abdominal bleeding, and my left fallopian tube was removed.
This happened in April, and I have been hoping to conceive again.
I have taken ovulation medication, and after adjusting my female hormones, my basal body temperature has been normal.
My last menstrual period (LMP) was on October 12, but I have not gotten my period this month.
Additionally, my basal body temperature has not shown a high temperature phase this month.
If I were pregnant, I would expect to see a sustained high temperature, right? On November 18, a pregnancy test showed negative, but I have noticed an increase in discharge, my breasts feel swollen, and my lower abdomen is also feeling bloated.
Is there still a possibility of pregnancy?

If the pregnancy test is negative, it may indicate either a lack of pregnancy or a hormonal imbalance.

After experiencing an ectopic pregnancy and subsequent surgery, many women wonder about their chances of conceiving again. In your case, since you have had your left fallopian tube removed due to the ectopic pregnancy, it is important to understand how this affects your fertility and the potential for future pregnancies.

Firstly, it is crucial to note that having one fallopian tube removed does not eliminate your ability to conceive. Women typically have two fallopian tubes, and if one is functioning properly, it can still facilitate the passage of an egg from the ovary to the uterus. If you are ovulating from the ovary on the side of the remaining fallopian tube, there is a possibility of natural conception. However, if you are not ovulating or if there are other underlying fertility issues, this could complicate your chances.

You mentioned that you have been taking ovulation medications and that your hormone levels have been adjusted, which is a positive step toward regulating your menstrual cycle and enhancing your chances of ovulation. The absence of a menstrual period and the changes in your basal body temperature can be indicative of several factors, including pregnancy, hormonal imbalances, or other reproductive health issues. It is essential to monitor your symptoms closely.

The fact that you have taken a pregnancy test and it showed negative results means that, at that point in time, you were not pregnant. However, it is worth noting that pregnancy tests can sometimes yield false negatives, especially if taken too early. If your period does not arrive soon, consider retesting after a few days or consulting with your healthcare provider for further evaluation.

In terms of your concerns about the potential for future pregnancies, it is important to have a thorough discussion with your doctor. They can assess your overall reproductive health, including the condition of your remaining fallopian tube and any other factors that may affect your fertility. If natural conception proves challenging, assisted reproductive technologies such as in vitro fertilization (IVF) may be options to consider. IVF bypasses the fallopian tubes altogether, allowing for direct fertilization of the egg and implantation into the uterus.

In summary, while having had an ectopic pregnancy and losing a fallopian tube can impact your fertility, it does not completely eliminate your chances of getting pregnant. Monitoring your cycle, understanding your ovulation patterns, and consulting with your healthcare provider will be key steps in your journey toward conception. If you continue to experience irregularities or have concerns about your reproductive health, seeking medical advice is essential for tailored guidance and support.
