Itchy Skin During Menstruation: Causes and Solutions - Dermatology

Menstruation is here. There is itching in the genital area?

Recently, I've been experiencing itching in my lower body due to my menstrual period.
I'm not sure why, but my genital area and the inner thighs are also very itchy.
I've noticed that when I wash during these days, it becomes red from scratching.
Additionally, I've experienced itching a few days before my period starts as well.
What could be the reason for this? Am I infected with something?

B.J., 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2007/11/21

Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology

Hello: It is not possible to diagnose an infection online.
I recommend that you pay attention to the following: wear breathable cotton underwear on a daily basis, and during your menstrual period, choose ultra-thin sanitary pads with a delicate surface and breathable outer layer.
Avoid scratching the affected area to prevent the condition from becoming stubborn and complicated.
Additionally, do not hesitate to seek medical attention; many girls feel embarrassed to see a doctor and often wait until a simple condition becomes serious before seeking help.
Best wishes.

Itchy skin during menstruation is a common concern for many women, and it can arise from a variety of causes. Understanding these causes can help in finding effective solutions to alleviate the discomfort.

Causes of Itchy Skin During Menstruation
1. Hormonal Changes: The menstrual cycle involves significant hormonal fluctuations, particularly in estrogen and progesterone levels. These hormonal changes can affect the skin's moisture levels and sensitivity, leading to dryness and irritation, which can manifest as itching.

2. Increased Sensitivity: Some women may experience heightened skin sensitivity during their menstrual period. This can be due to hormonal changes that affect the skin barrier, making it more susceptible to irritants and allergens.

3. Yeast Infections: The hormonal changes during menstruation can also create an environment conducive to yeast infections, particularly in the vaginal area. Symptoms of a yeast infection include intense itching, redness, and discharge. If the itching is localized to the vaginal area and accompanied by these symptoms, it may be worth consulting a healthcare provider.

4. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as eczema or contact dermatitis can flare up during menstruation due to hormonal changes or increased sensitivity. If you have a history of skin conditions, this could be a contributing factor.

5. Hygiene Products: The use of certain hygiene products, such as pads or tampons, can sometimes cause irritation. Some women may be sensitive to the materials or fragrances used in these products, leading to itching and discomfort.

6. Sweating and Friction: Increased sweating during menstruation, especially in the inner thigh area, can lead to friction and irritation, exacerbating the itching sensation.

Solutions and Recommendations
1. Maintain Hygiene: Keeping the genital area clean and dry is crucial. Use mild, unscented soaps and avoid harsh chemicals or fragrances that can irritate the skin.

2. Moisturize: If dryness is a concern, consider applying a gentle, fragrance-free moisturizer to the affected areas. This can help soothe the skin and reduce itching.

3. Wear Breathable Fabrics: Opt for cotton underwear and loose-fitting clothing during your period to minimize moisture and friction. This can help reduce irritation and allow the skin to breathe.

4. Avoid Irritants: If you suspect that hygiene products are causing irritation, consider switching to hypoallergenic or organic options. Avoid scented products that can exacerbate itching.

5. Over-the-Counter Treatments: For mild itching, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream may provide relief. However, it is essential to use it sparingly and not on broken skin.

6. Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the itching persists, worsens, or is accompanied by unusual discharge or other symptoms, it is advisable to consult a healthcare provider. They can evaluate for potential infections or other underlying conditions that may require specific treatment.

7. Track Symptoms: Keeping a diary of your symptoms in relation to your menstrual cycle can help identify patterns and triggers. This information can be valuable when discussing your concerns with a healthcare provider.

In conclusion, while itchy skin during menstruation can be uncomfortable, understanding the potential causes and implementing appropriate solutions can help manage the symptoms effectively. If the issue persists or worsens, seeking professional medical advice is always the best course of action.
