Questions After Nasal Surgery

Hello Doctor: I underwent septoplasty and turbinate reduction surgery on January 11, and it has been 19 days since then.
I noticed that there seems to be a line in my nose (on both sides), and today while blowing my nose, half of it accidentally came out.
I have already pulled the line out; is this a concern? (I am very anxious!!) May I ask: 1.
Will that line eventually fall out on its own?

Ms. Chen, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2008/01/27

Dr. Jian Huangqi reply Otolaryngology

If the line has come out, it's not a problem.
Please rest assured.
Thank you.

After undergoing nasal surgery, such as septoplasty or turbinate reduction, it's not uncommon for patients to have concerns about stitches or any foreign materials that may be present in their nasal passages. In your case, it sounds like you have encountered a stitch that has partially come out after 19 days post-surgery. Here’s a detailed response to your concerns.

Firstly, it’s important to understand that many surgical procedures, including those involving the nasal cavity, often utilize absorbable sutures. These sutures are designed to dissolve over time, eliminating the need for removal. However, the timeline for absorption can vary based on the type of material used and individual healing processes. In some cases, non-absorbable sutures may be used, which would require removal by a healthcare professional.

1. Will the stitch eventually fall out?
If the stitch you encountered is absorbable, it is likely that it will dissolve completely over time. However, if it is a non-absorbable stitch, it may not fall out on its own and would typically need to be removed by your surgeon or a healthcare provider. Since you mentioned that you pulled out a portion of the stitch, it’s crucial to monitor the area for any signs of infection or unusual symptoms, such as increased pain, swelling, or discharge.

2. What should you do now?
Given your situation, it is advisable to contact your surgeon or the healthcare provider who performed the procedure. They can assess whether the remaining portion of the stitch is absorbable or if it requires removal. It’s essential to have a professional evaluation to ensure that your healing process is on track and that there are no complications arising from the stitch being partially removed.

3. Post-operative care and monitoring:
After nasal surgery, patients are typically advised to follow specific post-operative care instructions, which may include avoiding vigorous nose blowing, using saline nasal sprays, and keeping the nasal passages moist. If you experience any discomfort, persistent bleeding, or signs of infection, it’s crucial to seek medical attention promptly.

4. Understanding the healing process:
The healing process after nasal surgery can vary significantly from person to person. While some may experience a smooth recovery, others may face challenges such as nasal congestion, discomfort, or the presence of foreign materials. It’s important to remain patient and communicate openly with your healthcare provider about any concerns you have during your recovery.

In conclusion, while it’s understandable to feel anxious about finding a stitch in your nose, the best course of action is to consult with your surgeon. They will provide you with the most accurate information regarding the type of stitch used and the appropriate steps to take moving forward. Remember, your health and peace of mind are paramount, and seeking professional guidance is always the best approach in such situations.
