Are there any side effects from medications used for urinary stones?
Hello, a urologist diagnosed me with mild urinary tract stones and prescribed medication to relax the urinary tract.
After taking the medication, I experienced full-body tremors and unusually high blood pressure the next day.
When I visited the emergency department, the emergency physician casually mentioned that it was a drug-induced side effect.
I would like to confirm if there are any known side effects associated with the medication for urinary stones, and if so, how long these side effects might last.
Additionally, I have experienced several episodes of elevated blood pressure since then, which did not occur prior to taking the medication.
Thank you for your guidance.

Dr. Lin Meili reply Pharmacology
Dear Sir/Madam,
There are many medications that can dilate the urinary tract, and without knowing the specific drug name, it is impossible to determine which medication may be causing the unusually high blood pressure.
Please provide the name of the medication for a proper response.
Thank you! Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely,
Pharmacist Lin Mei-Li

When it comes to medications prescribed for urinary stones, it is essential to understand that, like any medication, they can indeed cause side effects. The specific medications used to treat urinary stones often include antispasmodics, pain relievers, and sometimes medications aimed at dissolving stones or facilitating their passage. In your case, it seems you were prescribed a medication to relax the urinary tract, which is commonly done to alleviate pain and help stones pass more easily.
One of the medications you mentioned, Hyoscine butylbromide (also known as scopolamine butylbromide), is an antispasmodic that works by relaxing the muscles in the urinary tract. While it is generally well-tolerated, some individuals may experience side effects such as dizziness, dry mouth, or, in rare cases, changes in blood pressure. The occurrence of systemic shaking and significantly elevated blood pressure after taking the medication is concerning and should not be overlooked.
It is important to note that while medications can cause side effects, the symptoms you experienced—such as shaking and high blood pressure—are not typical for antispasmodics. However, individual reactions to medications can vary widely. Factors such as pre-existing conditions, other medications you may be taking, and your overall health can influence how your body responds to a new medication.
If you experienced elevated blood pressure and shaking after starting the medication, it is crucial to discuss these symptoms with your healthcare provider. They may want to evaluate whether the medication is the cause or if there are other underlying issues contributing to these symptoms. In some cases, medications can interact with one another, leading to unexpected side effects.
Regarding the duration of these side effects, it can vary. Some side effects may resolve quickly after discontinuing the medication, while others may take longer to subside, depending on how your body metabolizes the drug and your overall health status. If the symptoms persist or worsen, it is essential to seek medical attention promptly.
In addition to medication, managing urinary stones often involves lifestyle changes, such as increasing fluid intake to help flush out stones, dietary modifications to reduce the risk of stone formation, and regular follow-up with your healthcare provider to monitor your condition.
In conclusion, while medications for urinary stones can cause side effects, the specific symptoms you experienced warrant further investigation. It is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider about any adverse effects you encounter, as they can help determine the best course of action for your treatment and overall health. Always prioritize your safety and well-being by reporting any concerning symptoms to your doctor.
