Birth control pills and evening primrose oil?
Hello Doctor: I am currently taking Diane (Diane-35) and also consuming evening primrose oil.
I would like to know if these two might interact with each other and whether they could affect the contraceptive effectiveness.
I have been on the contraceptive pill for a while, but recently I have experienced slight bleeding around the ovulation period, which I am unsure if it is caused by the evening primrose oil or if it is related to a gynecological issue.
However, I do not have any other unusual symptoms.

1.
Evening primrose oil is not a conventional medicine; it is recommended that you consult a traditional Chinese medicine practitioner.
2.
Theoretically, taking birth control pills should prevent ovulatory bleeding.
If you are still experiencing it, it is advisable for you to come in for an examination.

More Info
When considering the interaction between Evening Primrose Oil and birth control pills, it's important to understand the pharmacological properties of both substances. Evening Primrose Oil is often used as a dietary supplement, primarily for its gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) content, which is believed to have anti-inflammatory properties and may help with conditions such as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and skin disorders. On the other hand, birth control pills, such as the one you mentioned (Diane), contain hormones that prevent ovulation and regulate menstrual cycles.
Based on current medical literature, there is no significant evidence to suggest that Evening Primrose Oil interacts negatively with hormonal contraceptives. The primary concern with any supplement while on birth control is whether it could potentially alter the effectiveness of the contraceptive method. However, Evening Primrose Oil does not have any known effects on the metabolism of contraceptive hormones, and thus it is unlikely to reduce the effectiveness of birth control pills.
That said, the occurrence of light bleeding or spotting around the time of ovulation could be attributed to several factors. Hormonal fluctuations are common, especially when starting or changing birth control methods. It is also possible that the introduction of Evening Primrose Oil could influence your hormonal balance, although this is not well-documented. If you have been taking the oil for a while and have recently noticed changes in your menstrual cycle, it may be worth discussing with your healthcare provider to rule out any underlying gynecological issues.
In summary, while there is no documented interaction between Evening Primrose Oil and birth control pills that would compromise contraceptive effectiveness, individual responses can vary. If you are experiencing unusual symptoms such as light bleeding, it is advisable to consult with your healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status. Additionally, if you have concerns about the use of supplements while on hormonal contraceptives, your provider can help you navigate these choices safely. Always ensure that any supplements you take are discussed with your healthcare provider, especially when you are on prescribed medications.
