Finger joint pain

Hello Dr.
Chen: I do not have any sports injuries or trauma, but my fingers cannot bend or straighten properly.
I am unable to hold a pen or use chopsticks, and the joints in my fingers experience sharp pain.
Pressing on them increases the pain and weakness.
My fingers have also become deformed, and they are very cold in winter, as well as in summer, so I often wear gloves.
Could you please advise me on what might be the cause of these symptoms? Thank you, and I wish you peace and joy.
Angel

Dear Netizens: There are many causes of finger joint pain.
Common causes include tendon and ligament inflammation due to overuse or injury, degenerative arthritis of the small joints, arthritis caused by rheumatic autoimmune diseases, and bone pathologies.
Less common causes may include vascular disorders, nerve disorders, and tumors.
To understand the cause of your condition, it is essential to undergo further examination and assessment for effective treatment.
Wishing you peace and health! Sincerely, Dr.

Hello Angel,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding finger joint pain and the difficulties you're experiencing with finger movement. Based on the symptoms you've described, it sounds like you may be dealing with a condition that affects the joints and soft tissues of your fingers. Let's explore some potential causes and solutions for your situation.

Possible Causes of Finger Joint Pain
1. Arthritis: One of the most common causes of joint pain, especially in the fingers, is arthritis. There are different types of arthritis, including osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Osteoarthritis is a degenerative joint disease that occurs due to wear and tear over time, while rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune condition that can cause inflammation and pain in the joints.

2. Tendonitis: This condition occurs when the tendons that connect muscles to bones become inflamed. In the fingers, this can lead to pain, stiffness, and difficulty in movement. Tendonitis can be caused by repetitive motions or overuse.

3. Trigger Finger: This condition occurs when the tendons in the fingers become irritated and inflamed, causing the finger to catch or lock in a bent position. It can be painful and may require treatment to alleviate symptoms.

4. Nerve Compression: Conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome can lead to nerve compression in the wrist, which can cause pain, tingling, and weakness in the fingers. This might explain the "pins and needles" sensation you mentioned.

5. Raynaud's Phenomenon: Given that you experience cold fingers in winter, this condition might be relevant. Raynaud's phenomenon causes blood vessels in the fingers to constrict excessively in response to cold or stress, leading to numbness and pain.

6. Other Conditions: There are other potential causes, such as gout, which can cause sudden and severe pain in the joints, or even systemic conditions like lupus or scleroderma that can affect joint health.

Recommended Solutions
1. Consult a Specialist: The first step in addressing your symptoms is to consult a healthcare professional, preferably a rheumatologist or an orthopedic specialist. They can perform a thorough examination, possibly including imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs, to determine the exact cause of your pain.

2. Physical Therapy: A physical therapist can help you with exercises to improve flexibility, strength, and range of motion in your fingers. They may also provide modalities such as heat or cold therapy to alleviate pain.

3. Medications: Depending on the diagnosis, your doctor may recommend anti-inflammatory medications, pain relievers, or corticosteroids to reduce inflammation and pain.

4. Splinting: If you have conditions like trigger finger or arthritis, using a splint can help immobilize the affected finger, allowing it to rest and heal.

5. Lifestyle Modifications: Consider making changes to your daily activities to reduce strain on your fingers. Ergonomic tools for writing or using utensils can help minimize discomfort.

6. Warmth and Moisture: Keeping your hands warm, especially in colder weather, can help alleviate symptoms. Moist heat, such as warm paraffin wax treatments, can also be beneficial.

7. Diet and Supplements: A diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods (like omega-3 fatty acids) and possibly supplements (like glucosamine or chondroitin) may support joint health. However, consult your doctor before starting any new supplements.

Conclusion
Your symptoms are concerning, and it's essential to seek medical attention to get a proper diagnosis and treatment plan. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes and help you regain function in your fingers, allowing you to perform daily activities like writing and using chopsticks without pain. I wish you the best in your journey toward recovery and hope you find relief soon.

Take care and stay safe!
