Questions about baby oil?

Dear Dr.
Hsu, I apologize for bothering you again.
I am the one who previously inquired about the red spots resembling small rashes on the glans.
Since our last consultation, I have been following your advice and applying baby oil to the surface of the glans after showering for the past week or two.
Since I started using the baby oil, the rashes have not reappeared.
However, in the past few days, I have noticed that the skin on the area where I applied the baby oil has become more wrinkled and slightly red (without any pain or itching).
Therefore, I would like to ask you:
1.
Is the wrinkling and redness of the skin on the glans due to the application of baby oil, the previous rashes, or some other reason?
2.
Can I continue to use baby oil despite this phenomenon?
3.
Is it safe to apply baby oil long-term, or should it be used occasionally, such as 2-3 days a week?
Thank you for your patience in reading this.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

A-Zhi: Hello, baby oil contains some ingredients that can cause localized dryness, meaning it can draw moisture away from the glans.
Therefore, it is generally not recommended to apply too much.
Additionally, if used for an extended period, some individuals may have allergic reactions, so it is advisable to reduce the amount or frequency of use, such as 1-2 times a week.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can further discuss and research together.

Using baby oil for skin issues, particularly in sensitive areas like the genital region, raises several important considerations. Baby oil, which is primarily mineral oil, is often used for its moisturizing properties. However, its application in certain areas can lead to complications, especially if the skin is already sensitive or compromised.

1. Wrinkling and Redness: The development of wrinkles and redness in the area where baby oil has been applied could be attributed to several factors. First, baby oil can create a barrier that traps moisture but may also prevent the skin from breathing properly. This can lead to a buildup of moisture and potentially irritate the skin, causing it to appear wrinkled or red. Additionally, if the skin was previously affected by a rash or irritation, the healing process might lead to changes in skin texture and appearance. It's essential to monitor these changes closely and consider whether the baby oil is contributing to the issue.

2. Continued Use of Baby Oil: If you are experiencing adverse effects such as increased redness or wrinkling, it may be wise to reduce or discontinue the use of baby oil in that area. While it has been effective in preventing the recurrence of the rash, the current symptoms suggest that the skin may not be tolerating the oil well. Instead, consider using a lighter, non-comedogenic moisturizer that is specifically formulated for sensitive skin. These products are designed to hydrate without clogging pores or causing irritation.

3. Long-term Application of Baby Oil: Long-term use of baby oil, especially in sensitive areas, is generally not recommended. While it can be beneficial for moisturizing, prolonged application can lead to issues such as clogged pores, irritation, or allergic reactions in some individuals. It is advisable to use baby oil sparingly and not as a daily treatment. Instead, consider using it occasionally or for specific purposes, such as after bathing, to lock in moisture.

In summary, while baby oil can be beneficial for moisturizing, its use in sensitive areas should be approached with caution. If you notice any adverse reactions, it is best to discontinue use and consult a healthcare professional for alternative recommendations. Additionally, maintaining good hygiene, using appropriate moisturizers, and monitoring skin changes are crucial for managing skin health effectively. If symptoms persist or worsen, seeking advice from a dermatologist or urologist may provide further insights and treatment options tailored to your specific needs.

You can use soap or some cleaning agents to dissolve baby oil. Additionally, you can use a towel to scrub directly, which can effectively remove it.
