Small red spots appear on the skin of the legs?
Hello, I would like to ask about my little son (age: 18 months).
For the past four to five days, he has developed small red spots on his legs, quite a few of them, both small and large.
There are also some on his face, and only a few on his body.
He hasn't had a fever, his milk intake is about the same, and he seems to be in good spirits.
What could be the reason for this? He received a vaccination (Hepatitis A) six days ago and went to the park four days ago.
We have changed his bed linens, but there has been no improvement...
Thank you, Cinthia.

Hello Clintia: There are many possible causes for red spots on the skin of the legs, and it's best to see them in person for a proper diagnosis.
If there are both large and small round lesions, it could be urticaria (hives), or it might be due to insect bites.
It is important to consult a physician to evaluate and treat your child.
Wishing you good health.

When it comes to understanding the appearance of red spots on your toddler's legs, there are several potential causes to consider. Given that your son is 18 months old and has developed these spots over the past four to five days without any accompanying fever, it is essential to approach the situation with a careful evaluation of his recent activities and health history.
One possibility is that the red spots could be related to an allergic reaction. Allergies can manifest in various forms, including hives or rashes, and can be triggered by new foods, environmental factors, or even contact with certain materials. Since you mentioned that he recently went to the park, it is worth considering whether he may have come into contact with plants, insects, or other allergens that could have caused this reaction.
Another potential cause could be viral exanthems, which are common in young children. These are rashes that often accompany viral infections, even if there are no other symptoms like fever. Some viral infections can cause rashes that appear as red spots, and they may resolve on their own without specific treatment. Given that your son received a Hepatitis A vaccination six days ago, it is also important to note that some children may develop mild rashes following vaccinations, although this is not very common.
In addition to allergies and viral infections, other dermatological conditions such as eczema or contact dermatitis could also be responsible for the red spots. Eczema can cause patches of red, inflamed skin and is often associated with dryness and itching. Contact dermatitis occurs when the skin reacts to a substance it has come into contact with, leading to redness and irritation.
Since you have already changed the bed linens and observed no improvement, it may be beneficial to monitor the spots closely for any changes. Look for signs of itching, swelling, or if the spots begin to spread. If the spots persist, worsen, or if your child develops additional symptoms such as fever, lethargy, or changes in appetite, it is crucial to consult a pediatrician. A healthcare professional can conduct a thorough examination and may recommend further tests or treatments based on the diagnosis.
In summary, while the red spots on your toddler's legs could be due to various factors such as allergies, viral infections, or dermatological conditions, careful observation and consultation with a healthcare provider are essential for accurate diagnosis and appropriate management. Always prioritize your child's health and well-being, and do not hesitate to seek medical advice if you have concerns.
