Ankle injury
Hello doctor, last Saturday, August 9th, I injured my foot and ankle while playing basketball, commonly known as a sprained ankle.
I went to a martial arts center for treatment, but now, after more than a week, the area where my ankle bone is protruding still hurts significantly when lightly pressed.
I would like to know if this indicates a possible ligament injury.
Should I continue treatment at the martial arts center or go to the hospital for an examination? Additionally, the swelling has not subsided; my entire foot and ankle are still swollen, and there are areas of bruising, even on my toes.
I would appreciate your guidance on this matter.

Magnificent: Based on your condition, we first need to rule out any bone injury.
It is recommended that you visit an orthopedic clinic as soon as possible for an X-ray to further determine if there are any fractures or other issues.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

More Info
When it comes to ankle injuries, especially those resulting from activities like basketball, it’s crucial to understand the signs that indicate when medical attention is necessary. Based on your description of the injury, it sounds like you may have sustained a significant sprain or even a more serious injury such as a fracture or ligament damage.
Signs of Serious Injury
1. Persistent Pain: If you are experiencing severe pain, especially when applying pressure to the area, this could indicate a more serious injury. Pain that does not improve with rest or over-the-counter pain medications is a red flag.
2. Swelling and Bruising: The presence of swelling that does not subside after a week, along with bruising, suggests that there may be soft tissue damage or even a fracture. Swelling is a natural response to injury, but if it persists, it may require further evaluation.
3. Deformity: You mentioned that the area around your ankle appears to be protruding. This could indicate a dislocation or fracture, which requires immediate medical attention.
4. Inability to Bear Weight: If you find it difficult or impossible to put weight on your injured ankle, this is a strong indication that you should seek medical care.
5. Numbness or Tingling: If you experience numbness or tingling in your toes or foot, this could suggest nerve involvement or severe swelling that is compressing nerves.
When to Seek Medical Attention
Given the symptoms you’ve described—persistent pain, swelling, bruising, and the appearance of deformity—it would be advisable to seek medical attention from a healthcare professional, preferably an orthopedic specialist. While traditional treatments like those offered at a martial arts school can be beneficial for minor injuries, they may not be equipped to handle more serious conditions.
Recommended Actions
1. Visit a Hospital or Orthopedic Clinic: It’s important to get a proper evaluation, which may include X-rays or an MRI to assess for fractures or ligament tears. An orthopedic specialist can provide a comprehensive assessment and recommend the best course of treatment.
2. Rest and Ice: Until you can see a doctor, continue to rest the ankle and apply ice to reduce swelling. Elevating the ankle can also help minimize swelling.
3. Avoid Weight Bearing: Try to avoid putting weight on the injured ankle until you have been evaluated by a medical professional. Using crutches or a brace can help prevent further injury.
4. Follow-Up Care: Depending on the diagnosis, treatment may involve physical therapy, immobilization with a brace or cast, or in some cases, surgery if there is significant ligament damage or a fracture.
Conclusion
In summary, while some ankle injuries can be managed with conservative treatment, the symptoms you are experiencing suggest that a more serious injury may have occurred. Seeking medical attention is the best course of action to ensure proper diagnosis and treatment. Early intervention can prevent complications and promote a better recovery. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to injuries, especially those involving joints.
