Swelling of the foreskin?

Today I did some DIY, and afterwards everything seemed fine.
However, while showering, I noticed that the area under the foreskin near the tip of the penis to close to the base has swollen.
It has reduced a bit, but it is still quite swollen, and the skin underneath the penis is a bit red.
What could be the issue? What might happen? Thank you, Dr.
Hsu, for your help.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, the swelling at the base of the penis may be due to the following reasons: 1.
In some individuals, skin irritation can lead to increased permeability of local blood vessels, resulting in the accumulation of fluid in the interstitial tissue, which causes edema.
2.
There may be an issue with the foreskin, where it can be narrower in certain areas.
Normally, this does not cause any blockage of blood flow; however, during erection or heightened arousal, it can become constricted, which is another possible cause.
3.
In addition to swelling, if there is redness of the penile skin, it may indicate irritation or infection, which requires examination for proper diagnosis.
If you have any further questions or need clarification, feel free to ask for further discussion.
Sincerely, Dr.
Hsu Wei-Kai, Director of Urology, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

Swelling of the foreskin, also known as preputial edema, can be concerning, especially if it occurs suddenly or after an activity such as DIY (do-it-yourself) sexual stimulation. The symptoms you describe, including swelling of the foreskin and redness, could be attributed to several factors.

Possible Causes of Swelling
1. Trauma or Injury: If you applied excessive force during your DIY activity, it could lead to minor trauma or injury to the foreskin or the glans (the head of the penis). This can cause localized swelling and redness as the body responds to the injury.

2. Infection: Infections, such as balanitis (inflammation of the glans) or posthitis (inflammation of the foreskin), can lead to swelling and redness. These infections can be caused by bacteria, yeast, or sexually transmitted infections (STIs). If there is any discharge, pain, or persistent redness, it may indicate an infection.

3. Allergic Reaction: Sometimes, irritation or an allergic reaction to soaps, lotions, or lubricants used during sexual activity can cause swelling and redness. If you used any new products, consider whether they could be the cause.

4. Phimosis: If the foreskin is unable to retract fully over the glans, it can lead to swelling and discomfort. This condition can be exacerbated by trauma or infection.

5. Lymphatic Response: The lymphatic system may react to trauma or infection by causing localized swelling. This is a natural response as the body works to heal itself.

What to Do Next
1. Monitor Symptoms: Keep an eye on the swelling and any other symptoms. If the swelling decreases and there are no other concerning symptoms (like fever, severe pain, or discharge), it may resolve on its own.

2. Avoid Irritation: Until the swelling subsides, avoid any activities that may further irritate the area, including vigorous sexual activity or the use of irritating products.

3. Hygiene: Maintain good hygiene by gently cleaning the area with mild soap and water. Avoid harsh soaps or chemicals that could exacerbate irritation.

4. Cold Compress: Applying a cold compress to the area may help reduce swelling and provide relief.

5. Seek Medical Attention: If the swelling persists for more than a few days, worsens, or is accompanied by other symptoms such as pain, fever, or discharge, it is essential to seek medical attention. A healthcare provider can assess the situation and determine if further treatment is necessary, such as antibiotics for an infection or other interventions.

Conclusion
While swelling of the foreskin can be alarming, it is often manageable with proper care and monitoring. However, it is crucial to listen to your body and seek professional help if symptoms do not improve or worsen. Remember, your health is paramount, and addressing concerns early can prevent complications. If you have any further questions or need clarification, don’t hesitate to reach out to a healthcare professional.
