Am I sick?
Recently, I had some conflicts with my good friend.
I value friendship highly, and friends are very important to me.
Perhaps because I care too much, sometimes it feels awkward between us.
I treat this friend very well, even better than my own brothers.
However, he has started to gradually avoid me.
We used to be very close, living in the same dormitory and commuting to school together.
One day, I couldn't stand this feeling anymore and expressed everything I had been thinking.
I became very suspicious and doubtful.
Later, I realized I was in a dilemma, which made things even more awkward and I didn't know how to face it.
I felt helpless.
He often says he doesn't know, as if he is placing all the problems on me.
He mentioned that he doesn't know how to deal with it and can only avoid it.
He pointed out several issues, saying that talking to me feels very stressful.
I have been too good to him, almost like a romantic partner, and I don't understand why he thinks this way.
He continues to avoid me more and more.
Eventually, we stopped talking much, but we still commuted together.
There were some verbal conflicts later on, and every time we discussed this issue, we couldn't reach a consensus.
I have been very straightforward about this problem, and he has said that I won't get the answers I want.
It's been a year and a half since I started college, and I have felt very unhappy, especially in the second half of 2008 when this situation escalated.
I haven't been able to feel happy at all; I wake up from nightmares and often feel very anxious.
Gradually, I lost interest in everything, and my smile disappeared.
I feel completely unable to be happy and think that no one understands me.
This winter break, everyone who saw me commented on how haggard I looked and how much weight I had lost.
I realized I couldn't break free from this feeling and became easily irritated, developing a dislike for people and not wanting to go out.
My friends always say I overthink things, but I wonder if that's really the case.

It sounds like you are experiencing a significant emotional struggle, and it's understandable to feel overwhelmed given the circumstances you've described. Your feelings of sadness, anxiety, and frustration, particularly in relation to your friendship and overall mental state, are important to acknowledge. It’s crucial to understand that what you’re experiencing may be indicative of a mental health issue, such as depression or anxiety, but only a qualified mental health professional can provide a proper diagnosis.
From your description, it seems that your emotional well-being has been impacted by various factors, including conflicts with a close friend, feelings of inadequacy, and a general sense of unhappiness that has persisted for an extended period. The fact that you are experiencing nightmares, loss of interest in activities, irritability, and physical changes such as weight loss are all signs that your mental health may be suffering. These symptoms can be associated with depression, anxiety disorders, or other emotional disturbances.
It's important to recognize that mental health issues are common and can affect anyone, regardless of their background or circumstances. The feelings of being misunderstood or isolated are also common among individuals experiencing emotional distress. You mentioned that you feel like no one understands you, which can exacerbate feelings of loneliness and despair. This is a critical point to address, as social support is vital for mental health recovery.
Here are some steps you can take to address your emotional struggles:
1. Seek Professional Help: It’s highly advisable to consult with a mental health professional, such as a psychologist or psychiatrist. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation of your mental health and recommend appropriate treatment options, which may include therapy, medication, or a combination of both. Many mental health professionals also ensure confidentiality, so you can feel safe discussing your feelings and experiences.
2. Talk to Someone You Trust: Sharing your feelings with a trusted friend or family member can help alleviate some of the burdens you are carrying. Sometimes, just having someone listen can make a significant difference.
3. Practice Self-Care: Engage in activities that promote your well-being. This can include physical exercise, which has been shown to improve mood, as well as mindfulness practices such as meditation or yoga. Even simple activities like taking a walk outside can help clear your mind and reduce feelings of anxiety.
4. Establish a Routine: Creating a daily routine can provide structure and a sense of normalcy. It can also help you manage your time better and reduce feelings of being overwhelmed.
5. Limit Stressors: If certain situations or people contribute to your stress, consider setting boundaries. It’s okay to take a step back from relationships or situations that are negatively impacting your mental health.
6. Educate Yourself: Learning about mental health can empower you to understand what you’re going through. There are many resources available, including books, articles, and support groups, that can provide valuable information and support.
7. Consider Group Therapy or Support Groups: Sometimes, talking to others who are experiencing similar issues can provide comfort and insight. Support groups can be a great way to connect with others and share coping strategies.
Remember, reaching out for help is a sign of strength, not weakness. You deserve support and care as you navigate these challenging feelings. Your mental health is just as important as your physical health, and taking steps to address your emotional struggles is a crucial part of your overall well-being.
