Breast
Dear Doctor: How many types of breasts are there for women? Because the breasts of a female companion I know feel solid, similar to the muscles in an arm.
However, a recent female companion I met has C-cup breasts, but when I squeeze them, they feel completely soft, like squeezing a sponge or softer silicone (not implants).
Is this type of breast normal? Could there be any issues? Are there other breast shapes as well? Thank you!
You Dian Nian, 50~59 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/02/24
Dr. Wu Jingtang reply Breast and Thyroid
Hello, in addition to glandular tissue, the breast also contains adipose and connective tissue, and the proportion of these components varies among individuals, which may lead to differences in texture.
As long as there are no abnormalities, lumps, or discharge, everything is considered normal.
Wishing you happiness! Sincerely, Dr.

More Info
Breast variations are a normal aspect of female anatomy, and understanding these differences can help alleviate concerns about what is considered "normal" versus "abnormal." The human body, including breasts, comes in a variety of shapes, sizes, and textures, influenced by genetic, hormonal, and lifestyle factors.
Types of Breasts
1. Glandular vs. Fatty Tissue: Breasts are composed of glandular tissue (which produces milk) and fatty tissue. The proportion of these tissues can vary significantly among individuals. Some women may have denser breast tissue, which can feel firmer, while others may have a higher fat content, resulting in a softer feel. This is entirely normal and does not indicate any health issues.
2. Breast Size and Shape: Breasts can vary widely in size (A, B, C, D cups, etc.) and shape (round, teardrop, asymmetrical). Factors such as age, hormonal changes (like those occurring during puberty, menstruation, pregnancy, and menopause), and body weight can influence breast size and shape. It’s common for women to have one breast slightly larger than the other, which is also considered normal.
3. Texture and Sensitivity: The texture of breast tissue can feel different based on hormonal fluctuations. For example, during the menstrual cycle, many women experience changes in breast tenderness and texture due to hormonal shifts. Some may notice their breasts feel softer or firmer at different times of the month.
Understanding Your Experience
In your case, you mentioned that one of your acquaintances has breasts that feel soft and spongy, similar to silicone but are not implants. This is a normal variation. The softness can be attributed to a higher percentage of fatty tissue or hormonal influences that may affect breast density. It is essential to note that the feel of breast tissue does not inherently indicate a problem.
When to Seek Medical Advice
While variations in breast texture and size are typically normal, certain changes may warrant a visit to a healthcare provider. These include:
- Lumps or Masses: If you or someone else notices a new lump or a change in the texture of the breast that feels different from the surrounding tissue, it’s advisable to consult a healthcare professional for evaluation.
- Persistent Pain: Intermittent breast pain is common, especially related to hormonal changes, but persistent or severe pain should be assessed by a doctor.
- Changes in Nipple Appearance: Any significant changes in the appearance of the nipples, such as discharge, inversion, or unusual color changes, should be evaluated.
- Skin Changes: Changes in the skin of the breast, such as redness, dimpling, or puckering, can be signs of underlying issues and should be checked by a healthcare provider.
Conclusion
In summary, breast variations in size, shape, and texture are normal and can be influenced by a variety of factors. The softness you described in your acquaintance's breasts is likely a normal variation and not a cause for concern. However, if there are any unusual changes or symptoms, it is always best to consult with a healthcare professional for personalized advice and peace of mind. Regular self-examinations and awareness of your body can help you identify any changes that may need further investigation.
