Is it autonomic nervous system dysfunction?
Hello, I was recently diagnosed with anxiety disorder.
A few months ago, I watched a health-related program that may have triggered my tendency to think negatively, especially regarding health.
Whenever I feel even a slight pain, I become very afraid that I have a terminal illness, which leads to anxiety and panic throughout the day, even causing sleeplessness.
After experiencing these symptoms for several months, just before the Lunar New Year, I suddenly noticed that before falling asleep, I would experience hand tremors accompanied by palpitations, along with symptoms of anxiety that prevented me from sleeping.
Could the hand tremors and palpitations be related to my ongoing anxiety? I have had an electrocardiogram (ECG) done, which showed no abnormalities.
Recently, due to neck muscle stiffness, the palpitations and tremors have reappeared, and these symptoms only occur while I am sleeping.
Why do I suddenly wake up with a racing heart and hand tremors? Could this be related to autonomic nervous system dysregulation? Thank you.

Hello: First of all, welcome to your letter.
According to what you mentioned in your letter, you indeed have symptoms of anxiety disorder.
Patients with anxiety disorder often experience some physiological symptoms such as chest tightness, palpitations, headaches, and tremors.
Insomnia is also very common.
Patients may wake up during sleep due to physiological symptoms.
The exact cause of anxiety disorder is still unclear.
Because it often coexists with both physiological and psychological symptoms, it is sometimes referred to as a type of autonomic nervous system dysfunction.
Currently, treatment primarily involves a combination of medication and psychotherapy.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Thank you.

Hello! It sounds like you are experiencing a challenging time with anxiety and related symptoms. Based on your description, it is quite possible that your symptoms, including hand tremors, palpitations, and feelings of anxiety, are indeed related to an imbalance in your autonomic nervous system (ANS).
The autonomic nervous system is responsible for regulating involuntary bodily functions, including heart rate, blood pressure, respiration, and digestion. It consists of two main branches: the sympathetic nervous system, which prepares the body for 'fight or flight' responses, and the parasympathetic nervous system, which promotes 'rest and digest' functions. When you are under stress or experiencing anxiety, the sympathetic nervous system can become overactive, leading to symptoms such as increased heart rate (palpitations), tremors, and muscle tension.
Your experience of hand tremors and palpitations, especially when trying to sleep, can be attributed to heightened anxiety levels. Anxiety can trigger the release of stress hormones like adrenaline, which can cause physical symptoms such as trembling, increased heart rate, and even feelings of panic. It is not uncommon for individuals with anxiety to experience these symptoms, particularly when they are trying to relax or fall asleep, as the body may still be in a heightened state of alertness.
Additionally, the muscle tension you mentioned in your neck can contribute to feelings of discomfort and anxiety. When the muscles are tense, it can create a cycle of discomfort that exacerbates anxiety, leading to further physical symptoms. This is often referred to as a somatic symptom, where psychological distress manifests as physical symptoms.
It's also important to consider the role of sleep disturbances in your situation. Anxiety can significantly impact sleep quality, leading to insomnia or disrupted sleep patterns. When you are unable to get restful sleep, it can further exacerbate feelings of anxiety and create a vicious cycle of worry and physical symptoms.
Given that your heart tests have come back normal, it is reassuring that there are no underlying cardiac issues. However, it would be beneficial to continue exploring the psychological aspects of your symptoms. Cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) is a highly effective treatment for anxiety disorders. It can help you identify and challenge negative thought patterns, such as catastrophizing health concerns, and develop healthier coping strategies.
In addition to therapy, lifestyle changes can also play a crucial role in managing anxiety. Regular physical activity, mindfulness practices such as meditation or yoga, and maintaining a balanced diet can help regulate the autonomic nervous system and reduce anxiety symptoms. Furthermore, ensuring good sleep hygiene—such as establishing a regular sleep schedule, creating a calming bedtime routine, and minimizing screen time before bed—can improve your overall sleep quality.
If you find that your symptoms persist or worsen, it may be worth discussing medication options with a healthcare provider. Some individuals benefit from medications that help regulate anxiety and improve overall mood.
In summary, your symptoms of hand tremors, palpitations, and anxiety are likely interconnected and may be influenced by an imbalance in your autonomic nervous system. Seeking support from a mental health professional, engaging in therapeutic practices, and making lifestyle adjustments can significantly improve your situation. Remember, you are not alone in this, and with the right support and strategies, it is possible to manage and reduce your anxiety symptoms effectively.
