Unexplained skin itching?
Hello, I have been experiencing unexplained itching on my skin since about last year.
I have observed that there is no obvious correlation with food, medications, temperature, or skincare products.
The itchy areas are also not specific, but a common factor is that scratching makes it itch more, and after the scratch marks become red and swollen, the itching suddenly stops.
Alternatively, if I manage to resist scratching for a while, it will return to normal, but it is quite uncomfortable to avoid scratching.
Anyway, I would like to ask if this could be considered an allergy? Besides taking medication, are there any other methods for improvement? If I seek medical attention, should I see a dermatologist or an immunologist/rheumatologist? Thank you.

Mandy: Hello, your itchy skin with raised red welts is likely urticaria, which is an allergic skin condition.
You should take antihistamines and consult a dermatologist to analyze the possible causes.

Understanding unexplained skin itching can be quite complex, as it may stem from a variety of causes. Based on your description, it seems that you are experiencing pruritus (itching) without any clear triggers related to food, medications, temperature, or skincare products. This type of itching can be frustrating and uncomfortable, especially when scratching exacerbates the sensation.
One possible explanation for your symptoms could be a condition known as "idiopathic pruritus," where the itchiness occurs without an identifiable cause. This can sometimes be linked to dry skin (xerosis), which is common, especially in colder climates or during winter months. Dry skin can lead to a compromised skin barrier, making it more susceptible to irritation and itching.
Another potential cause could be related to dermatological conditions such as eczema or psoriasis, which can present with itching and redness. In some cases, conditions like urticaria (hives) may also cause similar symptoms, where the skin becomes raised and itchy due to histamine release, often triggered by allergens or stress.
Allergic reactions could also be a factor, even if you haven't identified a specific allergen. Sometimes, the body can develop sensitivities to certain substances over time, leading to unexplained itching. Additionally, systemic issues such as liver or kidney problems can manifest as generalized itching, so it’s important to consider your overall health.
In terms of treatment, the first step is to maintain skin hydration. Regularly applying a good moisturizer can help alleviate dryness and reduce itching. Look for products that are fragrance-free and formulated for sensitive skin. Avoiding hot showers and harsh soaps can also help maintain the skin's natural oils.
If the itching persists, over-the-counter antihistamines may provide relief, especially if there is a suspicion of an allergic component. However, if the symptoms are severe or do not improve with home care, it is advisable to seek medical attention.
When considering which specialist to consult, a dermatologist would be the most appropriate choice initially. They can evaluate your skin condition, perform necessary tests, and determine if there is an underlying dermatological issue. If the dermatologist suspects that your symptoms may be related to an autoimmune condition or systemic issue, they may refer you to an immunologist or rheumatologist for further evaluation.
In summary, unexplained skin itching can arise from various factors, including dry skin, dermatological conditions, allergies, or systemic issues. Maintaining skin hydration, using antihistamines, and consulting a dermatologist are key steps in managing your symptoms. If you find that your condition does not improve or worsens, further investigation may be necessary to identify the underlying cause.
