Swelling of the labia majora?
Hello, doctor.
After several instances of sexual intercourse (especially when it occurs multiple times in a day or lasts for a longer duration), I experience swelling near the right labium majus, which can be felt as a raised area about the size of a 5 to 10 cent coin.
Additionally, I have pain in the right ovary, and this occurs only on the right side (the swelling is also only on the right side).
It resolves with anti-inflammatory medication.
What could this issue be? Thank you for your explanation, doctor.

Dr. Cai Yonglong reply Obstetrics and Gynecology
Dear Xiao Bai,
This may be a right Bartholin's gland abscess, which can recur and improve with antibiotic treatment.
However, it may swell again after sexual activity or due to poor local hygiene.
Surgical treatment would prevent recurrence.
Ovarian pain could be due to inflammation or ovulation pain; please visit the obstetrics and gynecology outpatient clinic for evaluation.
Wishing you good health and all the best!
Sincerely,
Dr.

Swelling of the labia, particularly after sexual activity, can be a concerning symptom and may indicate several underlying issues. In your case, the swelling of the right labia and associated pain in the right ovary after sexual intercourse could be attributed to a few potential causes.
One common cause of labial swelling is vulvar edema, which can occur due to increased blood flow during sexual arousal and activity. This is a normal physiological response; however, if the swelling is significant or accompanied by pain, it may indicate an underlying issue.
Another possibility is vulvar varicosities, which are similar to varicose veins that can develop in the vulvar area. These can become more pronounced during sexual activity due to increased pressure and blood flow.
Infections, such as vulvovaginitis or sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can also lead to swelling and discomfort. Symptoms may include itching, burning, or unusual discharge. If you have had multiple partners or unprotected sex, it may be wise to get tested for STIs.
Another potential cause could be cysts, such as Bartholin's cysts, which can form when the glands that lubricate the vagina become blocked. These cysts can become inflamed or infected, leading to localized swelling and pain.
In your case, the fact that the swelling and pain resolve with anti-inflammatory medication suggests that there may be an inflammatory component to your symptoms. This could be due to physical irritation or trauma during intercourse, especially if it is frequent or prolonged.
It is also important to consider hormonal factors. Hormonal fluctuations during your menstrual cycle can lead to changes in the vulvar tissue, making it more susceptible to swelling and discomfort during certain times of the month.
To address your concerns, here are some recommendations:
1. Consult a Healthcare Provider: It is essential to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare provider, preferably a gynecologist. They can perform a thorough examination and may recommend tests to rule out infections or other underlying conditions.
2. Limit Irritation: If you notice that certain sexual positions or activities lead to increased discomfort, consider modifying these to reduce irritation.
3. Use Lubrication: If dryness is an issue, using a water-based lubricant during intercourse can help minimize friction and irritation.
4. Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of when the swelling occurs, its duration, and any associated symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.
5. Avoid Self-Diagnosis: While it may be tempting to self-diagnose based on symptoms, it is crucial to seek professional advice to ensure appropriate treatment and management.
In conclusion, while swelling of the labia after sexual activity can be a normal response, persistent or painful swelling warrants further investigation. By consulting with a healthcare provider, you can gain a clearer understanding of your symptoms and receive appropriate care.
