Hard lump in the armpit?

Hello..
I've been coughing on and off for nearly three months.
Recently, I've developed a painful bump under my armpit that resembles an acne lesion, and it often hurts enough to disturb my sleep.
Can you help me understand what this might be?

A prolonged cough can have a variety of underlying causes, including respiratory issues such as asthma or allergies, infectious diseases like tuberculosis, or gastrointestinal problems related to gastroesophageal reflux.
Therefore, it is advisable for you to seek further evaluation and treatment from a pulmonologist at a hospital.
As for acne-like pimples, it is recommended that you consult a dermatologist for further management.

More Info

Hello! It sounds like you're experiencing some discomfort in your armpit area, particularly with a painful bump that resembles a pimple. Given your symptoms and the context of a persistent cough over the past three months, there are several potential causes for the bump in your armpit.

1. Folliculitis: This is an inflammation of the hair follicles, which can occur due to bacterial or fungal infections. It often presents as small red bumps or pustules that can be painful. If you have been sweating more due to coughing or other activities, this could lead to irritation and infection of the hair follicles in the armpit area.

2. Lymphadenopathy: The armpit (axillary) region contains lymph nodes that can become swollen in response to infections, including respiratory infections like the one you are experiencing. This swelling can sometimes feel like a painful lump. If your cough is due to an infection, your body may be reacting by activating these lymph nodes.

3. Cysts: An epidermoid cyst or a sebaceous cyst can also develop in the armpit area. These are typically benign and can become inflamed or infected, leading to pain and discomfort.

4. Abscess: If the bump is particularly painful, it could be an abscess, which is a collection of pus that forms due to infection. Abscesses can occur in the armpit and may require drainage by a healthcare professional.

5. Skin Conditions: Conditions such as hidradenitis suppurativa can cause painful lumps in the armpit. This chronic skin condition involves the blockage of hair follicles and can lead to painful lumps, abscesses, and scarring.

Given that you have been coughing for an extended period, it is essential to consider whether there is an underlying infection that could be contributing to both your cough and the painful bump.

Recommendations:
- Consult a Healthcare Provider: Since the bump is painful and has persisted, it would be wise to see a healthcare provider for an evaluation. They may perform a physical examination and possibly order imaging or lab tests to determine the exact cause of the bump.

- Avoid Squeezing or Picking: If the bump resembles a pimple, it might be tempting to squeeze it. However, this can lead to further irritation or infection.

- Warm Compress: Applying a warm compress to the area may help reduce pain and promote drainage if it is an abscess.

- Monitor Symptoms: Keep track of any additional symptoms, such as fever, increased redness, or swelling, which could indicate a more serious infection.

- Follow-Up on Cough: If your cough persists, it is crucial to follow up with your healthcare provider, as it may require further investigation or treatment.

In summary, while there are several potential causes for the painful bump in your armpit, a thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional is necessary to determine the exact cause and appropriate treatment. Your health is important, and addressing these symptoms promptly can help prevent further complications.
