Hair loss, baldness?
Hello, doctor.
Recently, I have noticed a gradual increase in the height of the left side of my forehead over the past few months.
I once heard on a medical television program (it seemed to be traditional Chinese medicine) that poor kidney function might lead to hair loss.
Additionally, I usually have a diet high in sodium.
Could excessive sodium intake put a strain on the kidneys and cause hair loss or even baldness? If so, will the hair in the bald areas grow back after improving my dietary habits? Besides the aforementioned, are there any other possible causes? Thank you.

Hello: Common causes of hair loss in your age group include androgenetic alopecia, scalp infections, or hair loss due to thyroid abnormalities.
Therefore, it is advisable for you to consult a dermatologist first.
As for the Traditional Chinese Medicine issue you mentioned, I recommend seeking treatment from a TCM practitioner separately.

Hair loss and baldness can be distressing experiences, and understanding their potential causes is crucial for addressing the issue effectively. Your inquiry touches on several important aspects, including the relationship between kidney function, dietary habits, and hair health.
Firstly, the notion that poor kidney function can lead to hair loss is not entirely unfounded. The kidneys play a vital role in filtering waste products from the blood and maintaining the body's overall balance of fluids and electrolytes. When kidney function declines, it can lead to a buildup of toxins in the body, which may contribute to various health issues, including hair loss. However, it is essential to note that hair loss is multifactorial, and while kidney health is important, it is not the sole determinant of hair health.
Regarding your dietary habits, particularly the consumption of high-sodium foods, excessive sodium intake can indeed place a strain on the kidneys. High sodium levels can lead to hypertension (high blood pressure), which is a risk factor for kidney disease. However, the direct link between high sodium intake and hair loss is less clear. While a balanced diet is essential for overall health, including hair health, there is no definitive evidence to suggest that sodium alone causes hair loss or baldness.
If you are experiencing hair loss, it is advisable to consider other potential causes. Common reasons for hair loss include genetic factors (such as androgenetic alopecia), hormonal imbalances (like thyroid issues), nutritional deficiencies (such as iron or vitamin D deficiency), stress, and certain medical conditions. It may be beneficial to consult a dermatologist or a healthcare provider who specializes in hair disorders to rule out any underlying medical issues.
As for your question about whether improving dietary habits can lead to hair regrowth in areas that have thinned or balded, the answer can vary. If hair loss is due to nutritional deficiencies or poor dietary habits, addressing these issues may promote hair regrowth. However, if the hair loss is due to genetic factors or other medical conditions, dietary changes alone may not be sufficient to reverse the process.
In terms of specific dietary recommendations, a well-balanced diet rich in vitamins and minerals is essential for hair health. Nutrients such as biotin, zinc, iron, and omega-3 fatty acids are particularly beneficial. Foods like leafy greens, nuts, seeds, fish, and lean proteins can support hair growth. Conversely, it may be wise to limit processed foods high in sugar and unhealthy fats, as these can contribute to inflammation and overall poor health.
In summary, while there may be some connections between kidney function, dietary habits, and hair loss, it is crucial to approach the issue holistically. A thorough evaluation by a healthcare professional can help identify the underlying causes of your hair loss and guide you toward appropriate treatment options. Making positive changes to your diet and lifestyle can certainly benefit your overall health and may contribute to healthier hair, but it is essential to understand that hair loss can be complex and may require a multifaceted approach for effective management.
