Left ankle pain?

Hello doctor, I've recently been practicing dancing, and I don't know how it happened, but I've noticed that my left ankle is getting increasingly painful.
At first, it was just a slight soreness, but now it seems to be getting more serious.
I had a similar issue before that felt like rheumatism, but recently I've been exercising enough and my diet hasn't involved any overeating.
What should I pay attention to? Thank you, doctor.

Dr. Wang Shouji reply Orthopedics

GMP: The ankle joint is commonly subjected to sports injuries that can damage the ligaments.
If not fully treated, it may lead to sequelae such as instability, soreness, and weakness.
It is recommended to visit an orthopedic department for an assessment of the injury severity before deciding on the appropriate management.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.

Left ankle pain is a common issue among dancers, particularly due to the physical demands of dance styles that require agility, balance, and strength. The progression from mild soreness to more severe pain, as you've described, can be indicative of several underlying causes. Understanding these causes and implementing appropriate care strategies is essential for recovery and continued participation in dance.

Causes of Left Ankle Pain
1. Overuse Injuries: Dancers often experience overuse injuries due to repetitive movements and inadequate recovery time. This can lead to conditions such as tendonitis, which is inflammation of the tendons around the ankle.

2. Ligament Strains or Sprains: The ankle is supported by ligaments that can be strained or sprained during dance movements, especially those involving jumps or quick directional changes. A sprain occurs when the ligaments are stretched or torn, leading to pain, swelling, and instability.

3. Tendon Injuries: The Achilles tendon, which connects the calf muscles to the heel bone, can become inflamed or injured due to excessive strain, particularly in dancers who perform a lot of jumping or landing.

4. Impingement Syndromes: This occurs when the ankle joint is compressed during certain movements, leading to pain and discomfort. This can be exacerbated by tight muscles or improper technique.

5. Previous Injuries: If you have had previous injuries to the ankle, they may predispose you to new injuries or chronic pain.

Care Tips for Dancers
1. Rest and Recovery: It’s crucial to allow your ankle to rest, especially if the pain has intensified. Avoid activities that exacerbate the pain, and consider taking a break from dance until the pain subsides.

2. Ice Therapy: Applying ice to the affected area can help reduce inflammation and numb the pain. Ice the ankle for 15-20 minutes every few hours, especially after dancing or any activity that aggravates the pain.

3. Compression and Elevation: Using a compression bandage can help reduce swelling. Elevating the ankle above heart level can also assist in decreasing swelling.

4. Gentle Stretching and Strengthening: Once the acute pain decreases, gentle stretching and strengthening exercises can help restore mobility and strength to the ankle. Focus on exercises that target the calf muscles, Achilles tendon, and the muscles surrounding the ankle.

5. Proper Footwear: Ensure that you are wearing appropriate footwear that provides adequate support for your dancing style. Poor footwear can contribute to ankle pain and increase the risk of injury.

6. Technique Review: Consider consulting with a dance instructor or physical therapist to review your technique. Poor alignment or mechanics can lead to undue stress on the ankle.

7. Professional Evaluation: If the pain persists despite self-care measures, it is advisable to seek a professional evaluation from a healthcare provider, such as an orthopedic specialist or a physical therapist. They can assess the severity of the injury and recommend a tailored rehabilitation program.

8. Gradual Return to Activity: Once you begin to feel better, gradually reintroduce dance activities. Start with low-impact movements and slowly increase intensity as tolerated.

Conclusion
In summary, left ankle pain in dancers can arise from various causes, including overuse injuries, ligament strains, and tendon issues. Implementing rest, ice therapy, and proper care strategies is essential for recovery. If pain persists, seeking professional medical advice is crucial to prevent further injury and ensure a safe return to dancing. Remember, listening to your body and allowing adequate recovery time is key to maintaining a long and healthy dancing career.
