Medication Use

Today, I visited both my family doctor and a dermatologist.
The family doctor prescribed magnesium oxide four times a day, mucaine tablets three times a day, primperan three times a day, and kascoal three times a day.
The dermatologist prescribed cetirizine tablets once a day.
Can these medications be taken together?

donal, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/09/22

Dr. Liao Lingmei reply Pharmacology

Dear: Is the active ingredient of Cotrizine Ketoconazole? It has been found that Cotrizine (with the active ingredient Ketoconazole) may have potential interactions with Magnesium oxide.
Taking both medications together may decrease the blood concentration of Ketoconazole, leading to reduced effectiveness.
It is recommended to space the administration of these two medications by 2 hours to avoid compromising the antifungal effect.
Therefore, please follow the doctor's instructions: take Magnesium oxide, Mucaine, Primperan, and Kascoal after each meal; take Magnesium oxide before bedtime; and take Cotrizine at another fixed time each day (2 hours apart from Magnesium oxide).
Wishing you health and happiness.

More Info

When it comes to the safety of combining medications, it is essential to consider potential drug interactions and the pharmacological properties of each medication. In your case, you are asking about the concurrent use of Magnesium Oxide, Mucaine, Primperan, and Cetrizine.
Magnesium Oxide is primarily used as an antacid and a laxative. It works by neutralizing stomach acid and can also help with constipation. Mucaine is an antacid that provides relief from symptoms of gastric discomfort, such as heartburn and indigestion. Primperan (Metoclopramide) is used to treat nausea and vomiting and to facilitate gastric emptying. Cetrizine (Cetirizine) is an antihistamine that helps relieve allergy symptoms such as runny nose, sneezing, and itchy eyes.

From the information provided, there are no direct contraindications for taking these medications together. However, there are some considerations to keep in mind:
1. Timing of Administration: It is generally advisable to space out the administration of these medications to minimize any potential interactions. For instance, Magnesium Oxide can affect the absorption of other medications if taken simultaneously. It is recommended to take Magnesium Oxide at least 2 hours apart from other medications, including Cetrizine, to ensure optimal absorption and effectiveness.

2. Side Effects: Each of these medications has its own side effects. For example, Magnesium Oxide can cause diarrhea if taken in excess, while Primperan can lead to drowsiness or fatigue. Cetrizine is also known to cause drowsiness in some individuals. Therefore, if you are taking multiple medications that can cause sedation, it is essential to monitor how you feel and avoid activities that require alertness, such as driving.

3. Underlying Conditions: If you have any underlying health conditions, such as kidney issues or gastrointestinal disorders, it is crucial to consult with your healthcare provider. Some medications may not be suitable for individuals with certain health conditions.

4. Consultation with Healthcare Provider: Always follow the advice of your healthcare provider regarding medication use. If you have any concerns about taking these medications together, it is best to discuss them with your doctor or pharmacist. They can provide personalized advice based on your medical history and current health status.

In summary, while there are no significant interactions reported between Magnesium Oxide, Mucaine, Primperan, and Cetrizine, it is essential to take them at appropriate intervals and be mindful of their side effects. Always consult with your healthcare provider for tailored advice and to ensure safe medication practices.
