Can I breastfeed my baby after breast augmentation?

I had breast augmentation surgery a year and a half ago at a plastic surgery department, using an incision from the armpit to implant silicone implants into my breasts.
I am currently pregnant and about to give birth.
Can I breastfeed my baby? Will it have any adverse effects on my baby? Thank you for your response!

Ai Wen Wen Ti, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2009/11/12

Dr. Lü Lizheng reply Obstetrics and Gynecology

Hello: 1.
Generally, during breast augmentation, efforts are made to preserve the integrity and patency of the breast tissue, so even after undergoing breast surgery, normal lactation function can still be maintained, allowing for the possibility of breastfeeding.
2.
As long as legally approved materials are used, there will be no degradation, and no abnormal components will appear in the breast milk, which will not have any special effects on the infant.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely, Dr.

Breastfeeding after breast augmentation surgery is a common concern for many women who have undergone this procedure. In your case, since you had breast augmentation surgery a year and a half ago using silicone implants placed through an incision in the armpit, it is generally considered safe to breastfeed. Here’s a detailed explanation of the factors involved and what you should consider.

Safety of Breastfeeding After Augmentation
1. Silicone Implants and Milk Production: Silicone breast implants do not affect milk production or the ability to breastfeed. The mammary glands, which are responsible for milk production, are not typically impacted by the placement of implants, especially when the incision is made in the armpit. This technique, known as the transaxillary approach, minimizes disruption to the breast tissue and milk ducts, which is beneficial for breastfeeding.

2. Potential Risks: While breastfeeding is generally safe, there are a few considerations:
- Implant Integrity: Ensure that your implants are intact and have not ruptured. If there is a rupture, it is important to consult with your surgeon.

- Medication and Supplements: If you are taking any medications or supplements postpartum, check with your healthcare provider to ensure they are safe for breastfeeding.

- Breast Sensitivity: Some women may experience changes in breast sensitivity after augmentation, which can affect the breastfeeding experience. However, this varies from person to person.

3. Impact on Baby: Research indicates that silicone implants do not pose a risk to the baby during breastfeeding. The silicone gel is contained within the implant, and studies have shown that silicone does not transfer into breast milk in significant amounts. Therefore, breastfeeding after augmentation should not have adverse effects on your baby.

Recommendations for Successful Breastfeeding
1. Consult Your Surgeon: Before you start breastfeeding, it’s a good idea to have a discussion with your plastic surgeon or healthcare provider. They can provide personalized advice based on your specific situation.

2. Monitor Milk Supply: After giving birth, monitor your milk supply and breastfeeding progress. If you encounter difficulties, consider consulting a lactation consultant who can provide support and strategies to enhance milk production and breastfeeding techniques.

3. Breastfeeding Position: Experiment with different breastfeeding positions to find what is most comfortable for you. Some women find that certain positions help alleviate any discomfort related to their implants.

4. Regular Check-ups: Continue with regular check-ups for your breast health, especially after pregnancy and breastfeeding. This is important for monitoring the condition of your implants and overall breast health.

Conclusion
In summary, breastfeeding after breast augmentation surgery is generally safe and should not pose risks to your baby. The key is to ensure that your implants are intact and to seek guidance from healthcare professionals as needed. With the right support and information, you can successfully breastfeed your baby while enjoying the benefits of your augmentation. If you have any concerns or experience any unusual symptoms, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for advice.
