Post-circumcision issues?

Hello, doctor… I underwent a circumcision on the 28th at a clinic.
However, I have been experiencing urine splatter after the surgery.
I asked the doctor about it, and he said it was normal.
The problem is that because of the splatter, urine gets on the bandage covering the wound, which could make the wound wet.
Should I go back to the doctor to change the dressing? I returned to see the doctor on the 30th and received an ointment.
He only trimmed a bit of the back part of the bandage and instructed me to remove the entire dressing on the seventh day post-surgery and apply the ointment he prescribed on the 30th.
Is this medical advice correct? If the dressing does get wet from urine, what should I do?

Yiwun me?, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/01/02

Dr. Liu Jianting reply Urology

No problem! Maybe it's time to change the medication.

Post-circumcision care is crucial for ensuring proper healing and minimizing complications. After undergoing a circumcision, it is common for patients to experience some discomfort and changes in urination patterns, including the phenomenon of urine splitting or spraying. This can be particularly concerning if it leads to the dressing or bandage becoming wet, as moisture can create an environment conducive to infection.

Firstly, it is important to understand that some degree of urine splitting can occur after circumcision due to the changes in the anatomy of the penis. The urethra, which carries urine from the bladder, may be temporarily affected by the surgical procedure, leading to this issue. While your doctor has indicated that this is normal, it is essential to monitor the situation closely.

Regarding your concern about the bandage getting wet, it is indeed important to keep the surgical site dry to promote healing. If the bandage becomes wet due to urine, it can lead to complications such as infection or delayed healing. Here are some steps you can take to manage this situation:
1. Keep the Area Clean and Dry: If you notice that the bandage is wet, gently clean the area with mild soap and water, and pat it dry with a clean towel. Avoid rubbing the area, as this can cause irritation.

2. Change the Dressing: If the bandage is wet, it is advisable to change it. You can do this at home if you feel comfortable, or you can return to your doctor for a dressing change. Make sure to use sterile materials to avoid introducing bacteria to the site.

3. Monitor for Signs of Infection: Keep an eye out for any signs of infection, such as increased redness, swelling, warmth, or discharge from the surgical site. If you notice any of these symptoms, contact your healthcare provider immediately.

4. Follow Post-Operative Instructions: It is crucial to adhere to the post-operative care instructions provided by your surgeon. If your doctor advised you to remove the dressing after seven days, ensure that you do so gently and as instructed. Applying the ointment as directed is also important for promoting healing.

5. Consult Your Doctor: If you continue to experience issues with urine splitting or if you have concerns about the healing process, do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor. They can provide guidance tailored to your specific situation and may suggest additional interventions if necessary.

In summary, while some degree of urine splitting can be normal after circumcision, it is essential to manage the situation carefully to prevent complications. Keeping the area clean and dry, changing the dressing as needed, and monitoring for signs of infection are all critical components of post-operative care. If you have any doubts or concerns, always consult your healthcare provider for personalized advice. Your health and comfort should be the top priority during the recovery process.
