Is It Possible to Be Allergic to a New Supplement Brand? - Pharmacology

Do I have a drug allergy?

I usually take brand A's lutein supplement capsules and have been doing so for several years without any issues.
Recently, I decided to try brand B, but every time I take brand B's lutein, I immediately experience palpitations.
At times, I even feel short of breath while lying in bed, with a rapid heartbeat that I can clearly feel.
Starting from the morning of the day I took it, I occasionally felt palpitations while walking, and when sitting down, I could distinctly feel an irregular heartbeat.
This condition persisted until bedtime.
After I stopped taking it, the symptoms disappeared.
A week later, I switched back to brand A's lutein, and my health returned to normal without any palpitations.
I am unsure what went wrong, as brand B is a well-known and reputable brand.
I have checked the ingredients listed on the bottle, and they do not seem to contain any components that are likely to cause side effects.

Pharmacist, what should I pay attention to in the future? Could there be a specific allergy issue?
Brand B ingredients: Xangold marigold extract (contains lutein), β-carotene, goji berry extract, vitamin C, mulberry extract (contains anthocyanins), zinc gluconate, selenium yeast, vitamin E, sucrose stearate, magnesium stearate, vitamin B2, gelatin.
Each serving (2 capsules) contains 1.1 kg, with 30 servings per package.
Each serving contains: lutein (30 mg), anthocyanins (20 mg).
Brand A ingredients: Each serving (2 capsules) contains vitamin E (237.32 mg = 354 IU), highly concentrated deep-sea fish oil (EPA 42% + DHA 22%; 222 mg), lutein (30 mg), β-carotene (3.6 mg = 2,004 IU), synthetic corn lutein (1 mg), vitamin A (176.4 mcg = 588 IU).
P.S.
1.
Both brand A and brand B are very large and well-known brands; the stores where I purchased them are Cosmed or Watsons.
2.
I took brand B's lutein as instructed, two capsules daily, and it was not expired.
3.
I have never had a history of drug allergies, and I did not have any issues with palpitations before.
Thank you!

Dr. Huang Shenggang reply Pharmacology

Basically, you need to first determine whether these two brands are pharmaceuticals or food products.
Any pharmaceutical should have a drug registration number.
Since the ingredients of these two brands are quite different, it can be said that some components of Brand B may not be suitable for you.
It is recommended that if it is a pharmaceutical, there is no need to switch unless necessary.

More Info

It is indeed possible to develop an allergic reaction or an adverse effect to a new supplement brand, even if you have been using a similar product from a different brand without any issues. The symptoms you described, such as palpitations and shortness of breath after taking the B brand of lutein supplement, suggest that your body may be reacting negatively to one or more of the ingredients in that specific formulation.

When switching from one supplement to another, even if both are well-known brands, there are several factors to consider:
1. Ingredient Differences: While both A and B brands contain lutein, they also include different additional ingredients. For example, B brand contains various extracts such as Xangold (calendula extract), goji berry extract, and others, which may not be present in A brand. Any of these ingredients could potentially trigger an allergic reaction or an intolerance in your body, leading to the symptoms you experienced.

2. Additives and Fillers: Supplements often contain fillers, binders, or other inactive ingredients that can vary significantly between brands. These components can sometimes cause unexpected reactions, especially if you have sensitivities to certain substances.

3. Quality Control: Even reputable brands can have variations in quality control. Batch-to-batch differences can occur, and sometimes a product may be contaminated or improperly manufactured, leading to adverse effects.

4. Individual Sensitivities: Each person's body reacts differently to supplements. Just because you have not had issues with one brand does not mean you will not have issues with another. Your body may have developed a sensitivity to a specific ingredient in the B brand.

5. Underlying Health Conditions: If you have any underlying health conditions, such as cardiovascular issues, they could be exacerbated by certain ingredients in the new supplement. It’s essential to consider your overall health when introducing new products.

Given your experience, it is advisable to take the following steps:
- Consult a Healthcare Professional: Since you experienced significant symptoms like heart palpitations and shortness of breath, it is crucial to consult with a healthcare provider. They can help determine if you may have developed an allergy or if there is another underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

- Review Ingredients: Compare the ingredient lists of both supplements carefully. Look for any specific ingredients in the B brand that you may not have encountered before or that could be known allergens.

- Consider a Patch Test: If you suspect an allergy, you might consider doing a patch test with the ingredients of the B brand under the guidance of a healthcare professional.

- Stick to What Works: Since you have returned to the A brand and are feeling well, it may be best to continue with that product unless you have a specific reason to switch again.
- Monitor for Future Reactions: If you decide to try another new supplement in the future, introduce it one at a time and monitor your body's response closely.

In summary, while it is common to switch supplement brands, individual reactions can vary widely based on the formulation and your unique body chemistry. Always prioritize your health and safety by consulting with a healthcare professional when you experience adverse effects.
