Sun protection while swimming
Hello Dr.
Huang,
I would like to ask if there are any methods to avoid getting tanned during swimming lessons from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM.
How should I choose a sunscreen, and what are the precautions for its use (such as how long before application)? Thank you!
Tim, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/03/15
Dr. Huang Ruiyun reply Dermatology
Hello: It is nearly impossible to avoid tanning completely.
However, it is still recommended to use sunscreen to prevent sunburn and excessive tanning.
Key points: 1.
Water-resistant means it is suitable for swimming.
2.
Broad-spectrum indicates protection against both UVA and UVB rays.
3.
Use sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and PA+++ (or PPD 6-8).
4.
Apply sunscreen twice before swimming, meaning to apply a layer, then reapply another layer, about 20 minutes before sun exposure.
5.
As long as it does not disrupt class, seek shade whenever possible.
If feasible, reapply during class.
Wishing you good health.

More Info
When it comes to protecting your skin from sun damage while swimming, especially during peak sun hours (like 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM), it's crucial to choose the right sunscreen and apply it correctly. Here are some effective tips to help you minimize sun exposure and avoid getting sunburned or excessively tanned.
Choosing the Right Sunscreen
1. Broad-Spectrum Protection: Look for a sunscreen labeled as "broad-spectrum." This means it protects against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays can prematurely age your skin and contribute to skin cancer, while UVB rays are primarily responsible for sunburn.
2. SPF Rating: Choose a sunscreen with an SPF of at least 30. Higher SPF ratings provide more protection, but no sunscreen can block 100% of UV rays. SPF 30 blocks about 97% of UVB rays, while SPF 50 blocks about 98%.
3. Water-Resistant Formulation: Since you will be swimming, opt for a water-resistant sunscreen. This type of sunscreen maintains its SPF protection for a certain period while you are in the water (usually 40 to 80 minutes). However, it’s essential to reapply after swimming or sweating.
4. PA Rating: If available, look for a PA rating (which indicates UVA protection). A PA+++ rating is ideal, as it signifies a high level of protection against UVA rays.
Application Tips
1. Timing of Application: Apply sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before going outside. This allows the ingredients to bind to your skin effectively and provide optimal protection.
2. Amount to Use: Use about one ounce (a shot glass full) of sunscreen to cover your entire body. For your face, use about a nickel-sized amount. Many people under-apply sunscreen, which can significantly reduce its effectiveness.
3. Reapplication: Reapply sunscreen every two hours, or immediately after swimming, sweating, or towel drying. Even water-resistant sunscreens can wear off, so it's crucial to keep your protection up.
4. Layering: If you are using other skincare products, apply sunscreen last. If you wear makeup, consider using a powder sunscreen or a setting spray with SPF for reapplication throughout the day.
Additional Protective Measures
1. Seek Shade: Whenever possible, stay in the shade, especially during peak sun hours. This can significantly reduce your UV exposure.
2. Wear Protective Clothing: Consider wearing UV-protective swimwear, hats, and sunglasses. Long-sleeved rash guards can provide additional protection without the need for sunscreen on those areas.
3. Monitor the UV Index: Check the UV index for your area. If it’s high, take extra precautions, as the risk of harm from unprotected sun exposure is greater.
4. Hydration and Skin Care: After swimming, rinse off chlorine or saltwater and apply a moisturizer to help maintain your skin's hydration. This can prevent dryness and irritation.
Conclusion
While it’s nearly impossible to avoid tanning altogether if you’re swimming outdoors, following these tips can help you minimize sun damage and protect your skin effectively. Remember that consistent and proper application of sunscreen is key to safeguarding your skin against harmful UV rays. If you have specific skin concerns or conditions, consulting with a dermatologist can provide personalized recommendations tailored to your needs.
