Which department should I visit?

Recently, I have noticed pain in the right lower back.
When I twist my body to the right, I feel tightness in the front of my right thigh.
I tried to lift my right leg, but I can't raise it as high as my left leg, and I experience a sharp, shooting pain that travels from my thigh down to the sole of my foot, somewhat similar to a numb sensation.
If I need to make an appointment, which specialty should I see? Thank you.

More Info

If you're experiencing pain in the right hip area, particularly with symptoms like tightness in the thigh, difficulty lifting your leg, and shooting pain that radiates down to your foot, it's essential to seek the right medical specialty for an accurate diagnosis and effective treatment. Based on your symptoms, the most appropriate specialists to consult would be an orthopedic surgeon or a physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) physician, also known as a physiatrist.

Orthopedic Surgeon
An orthopedic surgeon specializes in diagnosing and treating musculoskeletal disorders, including issues related to bones, joints, ligaments, tendons, and muscles. Given your symptoms of hip pain and the associated tightness and nerve-like sensations, an orthopedic evaluation can help determine if there are structural problems in your hip joint, such as arthritis, labral tears, or other injuries. They may conduct imaging studies like X-rays or MRIs to assess the condition of your hip joint and surrounding tissues.

Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Physician
A PM&R physician focuses on restoring function and improving quality of life for patients with musculoskeletal and neurological conditions. They can provide a comprehensive evaluation of your symptoms and develop a rehabilitation plan that may include physical therapy, pain management strategies, and exercises tailored to your specific needs. They can also help identify any underlying issues contributing to your pain, such as muscle imbalances or nerve compression.

Additional Considerations
1. Physical Therapy: Regardless of which specialist you choose to see, physical therapy can be a crucial part of your recovery. A physical therapist can assess your movement patterns, strength, and flexibility, and design a personalized exercise program to address your specific limitations and alleviate pain.

2. Neurologist: If your symptoms include significant nerve pain or if there is concern about nerve involvement, consulting a neurologist may also be beneficial. They can evaluate for conditions such as sciatica or other nerve-related issues that might be causing your symptoms.

3. Pain Management Specialist: If your pain is severe and not responding to conservative treatments, a pain management specialist can offer additional options, including injections or other interventions to help manage your pain effectively.

Conclusion
In summary, start by scheduling an appointment with an orthopedic surgeon or a PM&R physician. They will be able to conduct a thorough evaluation, order necessary imaging studies, and develop a treatment plan tailored to your specific condition. Early intervention is key to preventing further complications and improving your overall function and quality of life. Don't hesitate to seek help, as addressing these symptoms sooner rather than later can lead to better outcomes.
