Inquire about blurred vision and night sweats?

This morning, while taking the bus to work, I suddenly felt dizzy and weak.
Then I started to feel a pressure in my head and my vision went blank.
After a while, my sight slightly returned, and I could see the shadows of other passengers.
I quickly got off the bus to catch my breath and noticed that my hands felt a bit numb, and I was sweating profusely and felt very weak.
I would like to ask the doctor if this is simply anemia, or would you recommend any specific tests?

Jill, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/05/06

Dr. Lai Hexian reply Family Medicine

Hello, in addition to anemia, paroxysmal arrhythmias or panic disorders could also present in this manner.
It is recommended that you visit a hospital as soon as possible for a thorough evaluation by a physician, who can then determine the most appropriate tests to conduct.

More Info

Experiencing blurred vision, dizziness, and sweating can be concerning, and it's important to understand the potential causes and when to seek medical attention. Based on your description, it seems you had a sudden onset of symptoms that included dizziness, a feeling of weakness, blurred vision, and sweating. These symptoms can be indicative of several underlying conditions, and while they may be related to something benign like dehydration or low blood sugar, they could also signal more serious issues that require immediate attention.

Possible Causes
1. Hypoglycemia (Low Blood Sugar): If you haven't eaten for a while, your blood sugar levels may drop, leading to dizziness, sweating, and blurred vision. This is often accompanied by feelings of weakness or shakiness.

2. Dehydration: If you were not adequately hydrated, especially in a warm environment, dehydration can cause dizziness, fatigue, and sweating.
3. Orthostatic Hypotension: This condition occurs when you stand up quickly, causing a drop in blood pressure that can lead to dizziness and blurred vision. It’s more common in individuals who may be dehydrated or have been sitting for a long time.

4. Anxiety or Panic Attack: Sudden episodes of dizziness, sweating, and blurred vision can also be symptoms of anxiety or panic attacks. These episodes can occur unexpectedly and may be accompanied by feelings of impending doom.

5. Cardiovascular Issues: Although less common, symptoms like these can indicate a cardiovascular problem, such as arrhythmia or even a transient ischemic attack (TIA), especially if they are accompanied by other symptoms like chest pain or shortness of breath.

6. Anemia: While you mentioned the possibility of anemia, it typically presents with fatigue and weakness, but it usually does not cause sudden blurred vision or dizziness unless it is severe.

Recommendations
Given the sudden onset of your symptoms, it is advisable to take the following steps:
1. Seek Medical Attention: If you experience these symptoms again or if they persist, it is crucial to consult a healthcare professional. They may recommend blood tests to check your blood sugar levels, complete blood count (CBC) to assess for anemia, and possibly other tests to rule out cardiovascular issues.

2. Monitor Your Symptoms: Keep track of when these episodes occur, their duration, and any accompanying symptoms. This information can be helpful for your healthcare provider.

3. Stay Hydrated and Nourished: Ensure you are drinking enough fluids and eating regular meals to maintain stable blood sugar levels.

4. Avoid Sudden Movements: If you feel dizzy, try to sit or lie down until the feeling passes. Avoid standing up quickly from a seated or lying position.

5. Consider Stress Management: If anxiety or stress is a factor, consider techniques such as deep breathing, meditation, or talking to a mental health professional.

Conclusion
While your symptoms could be due to something as simple as dehydration or low blood sugar, they could also indicate a more serious condition. It is always better to err on the side of caution and seek medical evaluation, especially if these symptoms recur. Early diagnosis and treatment can help prevent complications and ensure your overall health and well-being.
