Post-hemorrhoid ligation issues?
Hello, Doctor Hou.
I am a working professional.
I had hemorrhoid ligation surgery last Thursday, and it has been 5 days since then.
The doctor provided me with a list of precautions, which I have been following.
However, since yesterday, I have noticed that my underwear near the anal area feels sticky while I am at work, as if there is some mucus (this does not happen when I am resting at home in the evening).
When I get home and check my underwear, I find a patch of mucus with a faint fishy odor (I have been trying to eat a high-fiber diet lately).
Is this due to friction while walking at work, or could there be an issue with the hemorrhoid ligation? I still experience pain during bowel movements in the morning, which may indicate that the hemorrhoid tissue has not yet fallen off.
I kindly ask for your advice.
I apologize for reaching out, but I often work until 9 PM, and the hospital is not open for consultations at that time.
Thank you once again.

After undergoing hemorrhoid ligation, it is common to have concerns about post-surgical symptoms and what to expect during the recovery process. Based on your description, it seems you are experiencing some unusual symptoms, including a sticky discharge near the anal area and pain during bowel movements. Let's break down these concerns and provide some insights into what might be happening.
Firstly, it is important to understand that after hemorrhoid ligation, the body goes through a healing process. The ligation procedure involves placing a rubber band around the base of the hemorrhoid, cutting off its blood supply, which eventually leads to the hemorrhoid falling off. This process can take several days to weeks, and during this time, it is not uncommon to experience some discomfort, mild bleeding, or discharge.
The sticky discharge you mentioned could be a result of several factors. It may be related to the healing process itself, where the body produces mucus as part of the natural healing and lubrication of the anal area. However, the presence of a faint odor could indicate a potential issue, such as an infection or irritation. It is essential to monitor the discharge closely. If it becomes more pronounced, changes in color, or develops a stronger odor, it would be advisable to consult your healthcare provider.
Pain during bowel movements is also a common experience after hemorrhoid surgery. This discomfort can be attributed to the inflammation and healing of the tissue around the surgical site. It is crucial to maintain a high-fiber diet, as you mentioned you are doing, to ensure soft stools and reduce straining during bowel movements. Staying hydrated and possibly using stool softeners can also help ease this discomfort.
If you are experiencing significant pain or if the pain worsens, it is essential to reach out to your healthcare provider. They may want to examine you to rule out any complications, such as an infection or issues with the ligation itself.
In terms of your daily activities, it is advisable to avoid prolonged sitting or any activities that may cause excessive friction in the anal area, especially while at work. Wearing loose-fitting clothing and ensuring proper hygiene can help minimize discomfort.
Lastly, if you have any concerns about your recovery or if your symptoms persist or worsen, do not hesitate to seek medical advice. Your health and comfort are paramount, and it is always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to post-surgical symptoms.
In summary, while some discharge and pain can be expected after hemorrhoid ligation, it is crucial to monitor your symptoms closely. Maintain a high-fiber diet, stay hydrated, and consult your healthcare provider if you notice any concerning changes. Your recovery is important, and addressing any issues promptly can help ensure a smoother healing process.
