Internal hemorrhoid ligation
Hello Doctor, I have undergone two ligation surgeries for internal hemorrhoids (the second one was very close to the anal opening).
It has been over three weeks since the last procedure.
During my last follow-up appointment, the doctor mentioned that once the wound heals, there should be no issues.
However, I would like to ask if it is normal to experience a sensation of urgency and a prickling feeling at the anal area during this period.
The doctor mentioned that it could be due to excessive tension in the autonomic nervous system.
Thank you for your guidance!

It is normal to experience mild stinging after hemorrhoid ligation.
You can use ointments or take sitz baths to alleviate discomfort.

After undergoing hemorrhoid ligation surgery, it is common to experience a variety of symptoms as your body heals. The procedure, while generally safe and effective, can lead to discomfort and changes in bowel habits, which can be concerning for many patients.
Firstly, it is important to understand that the sensation of urgency or the feeling of needing to have a bowel movement can persist for some time after surgery. This is often due to the body's healing process and the adjustments that occur in the anal region. The ligation of hemorrhoids can cause temporary inflammation and irritation, which may lead to heightened sensitivity in the area. This can manifest as a feeling of pressure or urgency, even if the bowels are not full.
The "stinging" or "tingling" sensation you mentioned around the anus can also be attributed to the autonomic nervous system's response to the surgery. The autonomic nervous system controls involuntary bodily functions, including those related to digestion and bowel movements. After surgery, it is not uncommon for this system to be somewhat out of balance, leading to sensations that may feel unusual or uncomfortable. This can be exacerbated by anxiety or stress about the surgery and recovery process, which can further tighten the muscles in the pelvic area.
In terms of healing, it is essential to follow your doctor's advice regarding post-operative care. This typically includes maintaining a high-fiber diet to prevent constipation, staying hydrated, and possibly using stool softeners if recommended. Avoiding straining during bowel movements is crucial, as this can put additional pressure on the surgical site and delay healing.
As for the duration of these symptoms, it can vary from person to person. Generally, most patients find that discomfort and abnormal sensations begin to improve within a few weeks as the body heals. However, if you continue to experience significant discomfort, persistent urgency, or any other concerning symptoms, it is important to follow up with your healthcare provider. They may want to assess the surgical site to ensure there are no complications, such as infection or improper healing.
In summary, while it is normal to experience some discomfort and unusual sensations after hemorrhoid ligation surgery, these symptoms should gradually improve as you heal. Pay attention to your body, maintain good bowel habits, and do not hesitate to reach out to your doctor if you have concerns about your recovery. Your health and comfort are paramount, and your healthcare provider is there to support you through this process.
