Oily scalp
Hello Doctor: I have been struggling with oily hair since childhood, to the point where I hesitate to go out with family and friends.
I have visited dermatology multiple times, and the doctors have prescribed Polytar tar shampoo for treatment, but it doesn't seem to have a significant effect.
Are there any other methods to "alleviate" scalp oiliness for symptoms like this? Thank you!

Hello: 1.
Do not stay up late; go to bed by 11 PM at the latest, and maintaining a regular sleep schedule is the highest priority.
2.
Wash your hair twice each time.
The first wash should be with a cleansing shampoo, such as Kao's Soft and Smooth (green) or L'Oreal's Pure Clean formula shampoo (with a green package and transparent contents), rinse lightly; the second wash should be with Polytar, leaving the foam on the scalp for five minutes before rinsing.
During the washing process, do not use your nails; instead, massage with your fingertips.
3.
If you are too afraid to travel with family and friends, that is excessive; being overly concerned about your appearance can drive you crazy.
As a man, it's normal for the scalp to be oily.
In my family, everyone except me is male—there isn't a single person with a non-oily scalp! Wishing you peace of mind while traveling.

More Info
Dealing with an oily scalp can be a frustrating experience, especially when it affects your confidence and social interactions. It's important to understand that an oily scalp is often a result of overactive sebaceous glands, which produce excess sebum. This condition can be exacerbated by various factors, including genetics, hormonal changes, diet, and even stress. Here are some effective solutions and tips to help manage and alleviate the problem of an oily scalp.
1. Regular Washing Routine
Establishing a consistent hair washing routine is crucial. Aim to wash your hair at least every other day, or even daily if necessary. Use a gentle, sulfate-free shampoo designed for oily hair. The first wash should focus on removing excess oil, while the second wash can incorporate treatment shampoos like Polytar, which contains coal tar and is effective for conditions like seborrheic dermatitis. Allow the shampoo to sit on your scalp for a few minutes before rinsing to maximize its effectiveness.
2. Scalp Exfoliation
Exfoliating your scalp can help remove dead skin cells and excess oil buildup. Look for scalp scrubs or create a DIY scrub using natural ingredients like sugar mixed with your shampoo. This can help unclog hair follicles and promote a healthier scalp environment.
3. Avoid Heavy Products
Be mindful of the hair products you use. Heavy conditioners, styling gels, and oils can contribute to oiliness. Opt for lightweight, oil-free products that won’t weigh your hair down. Additionally, avoid applying conditioner directly to your scalp; instead, focus on the ends of your hair.
4. Diet and Hydration
Your diet can significantly impact your skin and scalp health. Incorporate foods rich in omega-3 fatty acids, such as fish, nuts, and seeds, which can help regulate oil production. Staying hydrated is equally important; aim for at least eight glasses of water a day to help maintain overall skin health.
5. Manage Stress Levels
Stress can trigger hormonal changes that lead to increased oil production. Engage in stress-reducing activities such as exercise, meditation, or yoga. Finding ways to relax can help balance your hormones and reduce oiliness.
6. Consider Hormonal Factors
If you suspect that hormonal fluctuations are contributing to your oily scalp, consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend hormonal treatments or lifestyle changes that can help regulate oil production.
7. Topical Treatments
In addition to Polytar, consider other topical treatments that can help manage oiliness. Products containing salicylic acid or tea tree oil can be beneficial due to their antibacterial properties and ability to reduce excess oil. However, always patch-test new products to avoid irritation.
8. Professional Treatments
If over-the-counter solutions are not effective, consider seeking professional help. A dermatologist can provide treatments such as prescription-strength topical retinoids or hormonal therapies that can help regulate oil production.
9. Avoid Over-washing
While it’s important to keep your scalp clean, over-washing can strip your scalp of natural oils, leading to a rebound effect where your scalp produces even more oil. Find a balance that works for you.
Conclusion
Managing an oily scalp requires a multifaceted approach that includes proper hygiene, dietary adjustments, and stress management. While it may take time to find the right combination of treatments that work for you, consistency is key. If you continue to struggle with excessive oiliness despite trying these methods, don’t hesitate to reach out to a dermatologist for further evaluation and tailored treatment options. Remember, you’re not alone in this, and with the right strategies, you can regain control over your scalp health and feel more confident in your daily life.
