Questions After Varicocele Surgery

Hello Dr.
Hsu: I underwent left-sided varicocele surgery on July 12 (Monday) and was discharged on July 13 (Tuesday).
The doctor said that the wound does not need to be dressed, just to keep it dry.
For the past few days, I have been experiencing tingling around the wound area (I have seen other responses from Dr.
Hsu), but I feel that the left testicle is swollen and protruding beyond the boundary of the scrotum.
It seems to have crossed the line...
It also feels like its angle is a bit off, slightly tilted to the right...
Is this normal? Could you please advise, Dr.
Hsu? Thank you.

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello, after surgery, due to the ligation of the veins, some individuals who are more sensitive may indeed experience a sensation of scrotal fullness and pain initially.
However, sometimes this can be attributed to postoperative inflammation caused by the surgery.
If you have concerns, you can return for a follow-up examination.
If there are any unclear points, feel free to ask again, and we can discuss and research further.
This message is from the Department of Urology, Director Hsu Wei-Kai, Taitung Hospital, Department of Health, Executive Yuan.

After undergoing varicocele surgery, it is not uncommon to experience some swelling and numbness in the surgical area. These symptoms can be attributed to several factors, including the surgical procedure itself, the body's healing response, and the manipulation of tissues during surgery.

1. Swelling: Post-operative swelling is a typical response as the body begins to heal. The surgical site may become inflamed due to the trauma of the procedure, and this can lead to a feeling of fullness or swelling in the scrotum. It is important to monitor the swelling; if it significantly increases or is accompanied by severe pain, redness, or fever, you should contact your healthcare provider.

2. Numbness: The sensation of numbness or tingling in the area surrounding the incision is also common. This can occur due to nerve irritation or damage during the surgery. As the nerves heal, these sensations may gradually improve. However, if numbness persists or worsens, it is advisable to consult your doctor.

3. Position and Shape of the Testicle: It is not unusual for the testicle to appear slightly different in position or shape after surgery. The swelling can cause the testicle to feel larger or to shift slightly. Over time, as the swelling subsides and the tissues heal, the testicle should return to its normal position. However, if you notice a significant change in the shape or position that does not improve, it is essential to seek medical advice.

4. Post-operative Care: Following your surgeon's post-operative care instructions is crucial. Avoiding heavy lifting and strenuous activities for a few weeks can help minimize swelling and promote healing. Wearing supportive underwear can also provide comfort and help manage swelling.

5. When to Seek Help: If you experience severe pain, excessive swelling, or any signs of infection (such as fever or discharge from the incision site), it is important to contact your healthcare provider immediately. These could be signs of complications that may require further evaluation or treatment.

In conclusion, while some swelling and numbness after varicocele surgery can be considered normal, it is essential to monitor your symptoms closely. If you have any concerns about the changes you are experiencing, do not hesitate to reach out to your healthcare provider for personalized advice and reassurance. They can provide you with the best guidance based on your specific situation and medical history.
