Bowe's papules
I have had some lumps around my penis for several years.
Recently, I went to Taichung Veterans General Hospital for a biopsy, and it was diagnosed as pearly penile papules.
The doctor advised me to apply a medication called Leda Cream, but I haven't seen much improvement.
I would like to know if there are other treatment options available and if there are hospitals in central Taiwan that can address this issue.

Dr. Mao Mingya reply Dermatology
Le Mei Beauty requires a period of use (at least 2 weeks) to see results.
If there is still no improvement, laser ablation may be considered.
In the central region, there are hospitals equipped with carbon dioxide lasers.
You can first call to inquire whether they have this equipment.
Changhua Hospital cares about you.

More Info
Bowe's papules, also known as pearly penile papules, are small, benign growths that typically appear around the corona of the glans penis. They are a common anatomical variant and are not considered a sexually transmitted infection or a disease. While they are harmless and do not require treatment, many individuals seek treatment for cosmetic reasons or due to concerns about their appearance.
The treatment options for Bowe's papules primarily include:
1. Topical Treatments: As you mentioned, your doctor prescribed a topical medication, likely a cream such as "Lomefloxacin" (樂的美), which may not have shown significant improvement. Topical treatments can sometimes help, but they are often not very effective for Bowe's papules.
2. Cryotherapy: This involves freezing the papules with liquid nitrogen. This method can be effective in removing the papules, but it may require multiple sessions and can cause temporary discomfort or changes in skin pigmentation.
3. Laser Therapy: Laser treatments, such as CO2 laser or pulsed dye laser, can effectively remove Bowe's papules. This method is generally well-tolerated and can provide good cosmetic results, but it may be more expensive and require specialized equipment.
4. Electrosurgery: This technique uses electrical currents to remove the papules. It is effective but may also involve some discomfort and requires a skilled practitioner.
5. Surgical Excision: In some cases, surgical removal of the papules may be considered, especially if they are causing significant distress or discomfort. This method is more invasive and may leave scars.
Regarding your question about medical facilities in Central Taiwan, you can consider visiting reputable hospitals or dermatology clinics that specialize in skin conditions. The Taichung Veterans General Hospital and National Taiwan University Hospital in Taichung are well-known institutions that may offer dermatological services, including the treatment of Bowe's papules. It is advisable to consult with a dermatologist who can provide a thorough examination and discuss the most suitable treatment options based on your specific situation.
In addition to medical treatments, it is essential to maintain open communication with your healthcare provider. If the prescribed treatment does not yield the desired results, do not hesitate to seek a second opinion or discuss alternative options. Remember that while Bowe's papules are benign, your concerns about their appearance are valid, and there are various treatment avenues available.
Lastly, it is important to note that while seeking treatment, you should also be aware of the potential for scarring or changes in skin texture, which can occur with any invasive procedure. Always weigh the benefits against the risks and discuss these thoroughly with your healthcare provider before proceeding with any treatment.
