Aftereffects of weight loss?
Hello, Doctor: Last year, after taking traditional Chinese medicine for four months, I lost over 20 kilograms, but then I suddenly experienced significant hair loss (my hair was already thin and soft).
I also had two episodes of widespread skin rashes that lasted for about a month each (including my palms and soles).
I initially went to the hospital to prepare for a biopsy, but I hesitated and instead started taking health supplements, which seemed to help the rashes gradually subside.
There was also an instance where I had slight throat pain, but my lymph nodes on both sides suddenly swelled.
After seeing a doctor, I discovered that my immune system was compromised and unable to fight off viral infections.
Are the hair loss (which is now more severe), skin rashes, and swollen lymph nodes all aftereffects of my weight loss? Which specialist should I consult? Please give me your advice!

Hello, thank you for your message.
Rapid weight loss can indeed lead to hair loss; however, if accompanied by rashes and lymphadenopathy, further investigation is necessary.
Generally, a physician will examine the scalp to determine whether the hair loss is simply due to alopecia or if there are signs of a dermatological condition.
Even in the absence of dermatological signs, if there are still rashes along with lymphadenopathy, immune function issues should be considered.
Therefore, if you are experiencing hair loss, rashes, and lymphadenopathy, it would be advisable to visit an allergy, immunology, and rheumatology specialist for an initial evaluation, after which further recommendations can be provided.
The allergy, immunology, and rheumatology department is here to support you.

Hello! Thank you for sharing your concerns regarding your post-weight loss symptoms, including hair loss, rashes, and lymph node swelling. It sounds like you've been through quite a journey with your health, and I understand how distressing these symptoms can be.
Firstly, significant weight loss, especially when achieved rapidly or through restrictive diets, can lead to a variety of physiological changes in the body. When you lose weight quickly, your body can experience nutritional deficiencies, which may contribute to hair loss. Hair follicles require a variety of nutrients, including proteins, vitamins (like biotin and vitamin D), and minerals (like zinc and iron) to remain healthy. If your diet during your weight loss journey was lacking in these essential nutrients, it could explain the increased hair shedding you are experiencing.
The skin rashes you mentioned could also be related to nutritional deficiencies or changes in your immune system. Rapid weight loss can sometimes trigger skin conditions or exacerbate pre-existing ones. The fact that your rashes improved after switching to health supplements suggests that your body may have been lacking certain nutrients that are now being replenished. However, it’s crucial to identify the specific cause of your rashes, as they could also be indicative of an allergic reaction, a dermatological condition, or even an autoimmune response.
As for the swollen lymph nodes, this can occur when your immune system is activated, often in response to infection or inflammation. If your immune system is compromised or struggling to cope with viral infections, it may lead to lymphadenopathy (swelling of the lymph nodes). This could be related to the stress your body is under from rapid weight loss, or it could be a separate issue that needs to be addressed.
Given the complexity of your symptoms, I recommend consulting with a healthcare professional who specializes in internal medicine or an endocrinologist. They can perform a comprehensive evaluation, including blood tests to check for nutritional deficiencies, thyroid function, and immune system status. If necessary, they may refer you to a dermatologist for your skin issues or a hematologist for further evaluation of your lymph nodes.
In the meantime, focus on maintaining a balanced diet rich in whole foods, including plenty of fruits, vegetables, lean proteins, and healthy fats. Staying hydrated and managing stress through relaxation techniques or moderate exercise can also be beneficial for your overall health.
Lastly, while it’s understandable to feel apprehensive about medical procedures like biopsies, it’s essential to address any persistent symptoms with your healthcare provider. Early intervention can often lead to better outcomes, so don’t hesitate to seek help.
Take care of yourself, and I hope you find the answers and relief you need soon!
