There are many small wounds on the glans?

Hello doctor, I have noticed that the surface of my glans has suddenly developed a lot of dirt over the past few days.
I have to rub it to remove the dirt, but after cleaning it, I found many small wounds on the surface of the glans.
I'm not sure what this is.
Could it be a sexually transmitted infection?

Mr. Zhang, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/07/31

Dr. Xu Weikai reply Urology

Hello Mr.
Zhang, I am unable to determine the cause of the wounds on the glans, but many are often due to the use of cleaning products.
Generally, cleaning with cold water is sufficient.
Soaps and similar cleaning agents are usually not recommended.
If there is localized skin breakdown, you can observe it at this stage.
After cleaning, apply petroleum jelly locally.
Improvement can be expected in about 3-5 days.
If you have any further questions, feel free to ask, and we can discuss and research together.

When it comes to small cuts or abrasions on the glans (the head of the penis), there are several potential causes and concerns that should be considered. Firstly, it’s important to understand that the glans is a sensitive area of the body, and any changes in its appearance or texture can be concerning.

Possible Causes of Small Cuts on the Glans
1. Friction or Irritation: One of the most common causes of small cuts on the glans is friction or irritation. This can occur from vigorous sexual activity, masturbation, or even from tight clothing. If the area is not adequately lubricated during these activities, it can lead to micro-tears in the skin.

2. Infections: Infections, particularly sexually transmitted infections (STIs), can also cause lesions or cuts on the glans. Conditions such as herpes simplex virus (HSV) can lead to painful sores, while other infections like candidiasis (yeast infection) can cause irritation and inflammation.

3. Balanitis: This is an inflammation of the glans, often caused by poor hygiene, irritants, or infections. Symptoms can include redness, swelling, and sometimes small cuts or fissures.

4. Dermatological Conditions: Conditions such as psoriasis or eczema can affect the glans and lead to skin changes, including small cuts or cracks.

5. Allergic Reactions: Allergies to soaps, lotions, or latex (from condoms) can cause irritation and lead to small cuts or rashes.

Concerns and Recommendations
- Infection Risk: If the cuts are accompanied by symptoms such as pain, swelling, discharge, or fever, it is crucial to seek medical attention. These could be signs of an infection that may require treatment.

- Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs): If there is any possibility of exposure to STIs, it is advisable to get tested. Early detection and treatment are essential for managing STIs effectively.

- Hygiene Practices: Maintaining good hygiene is vital. Ensure that the area is cleaned gently with mild soap and water. Avoid using harsh soaps or products that may irritate the skin.

- Avoiding Irritation: If friction is suspected to be the cause, consider using a water-based lubricant during sexual activity to reduce the risk of irritation.

- Consult a Healthcare Provider: If the small cuts do not heal within a few days, worsen, or if you have any concerns about STIs or infections, it is important to consult a healthcare provider. They can perform a physical examination, possibly conduct tests, and provide appropriate treatment.

Conclusion
In summary, while small cuts on the glans can be caused by various factors, including friction, infections, or dermatological conditions, it is essential to monitor the situation closely. If you notice any concerning symptoms or if the cuts do not improve, seeking medical advice is the best course of action. Remember, early intervention can prevent complications and ensure proper treatment.
