Fear of developing cancer?

Doctor, may I ask you a question? I am currently in the third year of junior high school and have been smoking for about three to four months.
Recently, I have noticed a few things: 1.
I have been coughing frequently.
On August 10th, around midnight, I coughed up phlegm and noticed a small spot of red (about less than 0.2 centimeters).
2.
Sometimes I feel pain under my right chest, above the ribs, but it mostly occurs when I am sitting at my computer desk! I have a bad habit of resting my chest against the desk.
My dad says it might be due to that pressure.
3.
My gastrointestinal health hasn't been great these past two to three days, and I have been experiencing diarrhea! Also, sometimes I notice hair loss, but it only happens when I pull at it (not very hard), and it's not a lot of hair.
I am very scared that I might have cancer, and I don't want my dad to know that I smoke.

Thank you.

It's understandable to feel anxious and concerned about your health, especially when you're experiencing symptoms that can be alarming. Based on the symptoms you've described, it seems like you're facing several issues that could be related to your smoking habit and possibly other factors. Let's break down your concerns and discuss what you should consider doing next.

1. Coughing and Blood in Sputum: Coughing, especially if it's accompanied by blood, is a symptom that should never be ignored. The presence of even a small amount of blood in your sputum can indicate a variety of issues, ranging from minor irritations to more serious conditions. Given that you've been smoking, it's crucial to consider the impact this habit can have on your respiratory health. Smoking can lead to chronic bronchitis, lung infections, and even more severe conditions like lung cancer over time. I recommend that you see a healthcare professional as soon as possible to get a thorough evaluation of your respiratory system.

2. Chest Pain: The pain you're experiencing under your right rib could be related to several factors, including muscle strain from poor posture, especially if you're leaning against your computer desk. However, it could also be a sign of something more serious, particularly given your smoking history. It's essential to have this evaluated by a doctor, who may perform imaging tests or other diagnostics to rule out any serious conditions.

3. Gastrointestinal Issues: Frequent diarrhea can be caused by various factors, including dietary choices, stress, or infections. If this is a new symptom for you, it's worth discussing with a healthcare provider, especially if it persists. Sometimes, gastrointestinal issues can also be linked to anxiety or stress, which can be exacerbated by smoking.

4. Hair Loss: While some hair loss can be normal, especially during times of stress, if you're noticing more than usual, it could be worth investigating further. Stress, poor nutrition, and smoking can all contribute to hair loss. A healthcare provider can help you determine if there’s an underlying issue that needs to be addressed.

5. Anxiety About Health: It's common to feel anxious about health issues, especially when you're experiencing symptoms that concern you. However, it's important to remember that worrying excessively can sometimes make symptoms feel worse. Seeking help from a mental health professional can be beneficial, especially if you're feeling overwhelmed by your thoughts about potential illnesses.

In conclusion, I strongly encourage you to seek medical attention for your symptoms. A healthcare provider can conduct a thorough examination, run necessary tests, and provide you with the appropriate guidance. It's also crucial to consider quitting smoking, as it poses significant risks to your health, especially at a young age. There are many resources available to help you quit, including counseling and support groups. Remember, taking proactive steps now can lead to better health outcomes in the future. Don't hesitate to reach out for help; your health is worth it.
