Nasal allergy issues?
Hello Dr.
Lin, I would like to ask you some questions related to nasal allergies.
1.
Can allergens be detected through a blood test? Once the allergens are identified, is it sufficient to simply avoid contact with them to improve the condition? Is medication necessary for improvement?
2.
Whenever my sister has a runny nose, my dad tells her to lie down, claiming that it will stop the runny nose.
However, I personally think this method lacks scientific basis.
Could this not lead to postnasal drip or throat issues? I would like to ask the doctor if this belief is incorrect and whether it could lead to other negative effects.
Thank you!
N, 10~19 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/08/28

Dear N/18/1,
1.
Allergens can be identified through blood tests, and our hospital offers specific blood testing for allergens.
Once the allergens are identified, avoiding exposure can lead to improvement.
However, to enhance the therapeutic effect, it is advisable to consult a qualified Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) practitioner who can prescribe medication based on "TCM syndrome differentiation" to improve the condition.
2.
The belief that "when my sister has a runny nose, Dad tells her to lie down, saying it will stop the runny nose" is incorrect.
This notion does not help the condition and may even cause postnasal drip, affecting the throat.
It is better to blow the nose to clear the mucus.
3.
Chronic allergic rhinitis is often triggered by environmental factors related to autoimmunity.
In my clinical observations, the most common allergens are air conditioning, dust mites, and polluted air.
In my practice, TCM treatment is often tailored to the patient's constitution, using herbal remedies to tonify the lungs and boost qi, as well as to dispel wind and open the nasal passages.
It is also beneficial to engage in regular exercise, take steam baths, and minimize exposure to air conditioning to improve overall health, which has shown good results.
Wishing you good health,
Dr.

Allergic rhinitis, commonly known as hay fever, is a prevalent condition that affects millions of people worldwide. It is characterized by symptoms such as sneezing, runny or stuffy nose, itchy eyes, and throat irritation, which occur when the immune system overreacts to allergens in the environment. Understanding the diagnosis, treatment, and common myths surrounding allergic rhinitis is crucial for effective management.
1. Diagnosis of Allergic Rhinitis:
Allergic rhinitis can indeed be diagnosed through various methods, including blood tests that measure the presence of specific IgE antibodies to potential allergens. Skin prick tests are also commonly used to identify sensitivities to specific allergens, such as pollen, dust mites, mold, and pet dander. Once the allergens are identified, it is essential to avoid exposure to these triggers. However, simply avoiding allergens may not be sufficient for everyone. Many individuals with allergic rhinitis benefit from pharmacological treatments, such as antihistamines, nasal corticosteroids, and decongestants, which help alleviate symptoms and improve quality of life.
2. Management of Allergic Rhinitis:
While avoiding allergens is a key component of managing allergic rhinitis, many patients find that they still require medication to control their symptoms effectively. Antihistamines can help reduce sneezing and itching, while nasal corticosteroids can decrease inflammation in the nasal passages. In some cases, allergen immunotherapy (allergy shots) may be recommended to desensitize the immune system to specific allergens over time.
3. Common Myths:
One common misconception is that lying down when experiencing a runny nose can prevent nasal discharge. While it may seem logical, this practice can actually lead to discomfort and complications. Lying flat can cause mucus to pool in the sinuses and throat, potentially leading to post-nasal drip, which can irritate the throat and exacerbate coughing or throat discomfort. It is generally more effective to remain upright, as this position can facilitate drainage and alleviate pressure in the nasal passages.
4. Potential Complications:
If allergic rhinitis is left untreated, it can lead to complications such as sinusitis, ear infections, and exacerbation of asthma symptoms. Chronic inflammation of the nasal passages can also contribute to the development of nasal polyps, which can further obstruct airflow and lead to more severe symptoms.
5. Lifestyle Modifications:
In addition to medication, lifestyle changes can significantly impact the management of allergic rhinitis. Keeping windows closed during high pollen seasons, using air purifiers, regularly cleaning bedding and carpets, and showering after being outdoors can help reduce allergen exposure.
In conclusion, allergic rhinitis is a manageable condition that requires a comprehensive approach involving avoidance of allergens, appropriate medication, and lifestyle modifications. It is essential to consult with a healthcare professional for a tailored treatment plan that addresses individual symptoms and triggers. Understanding the myths and facts about allergic rhinitis can empower patients to take control of their health and improve their quality of life.
