Cardiac issues
Hello, doctor.
I would like to ask a question.
After a vigorous exercise session, my heartbeat became irregular; it skips a few beats and sometimes pauses for a moment.
At its worst, it skips 2 to 3 beats before pausing.
I also find myself getting easily short of breath.
Now, even when I'm just sitting, my heart still pauses, although the frequency has lengthened.
Could this be a serious symptom? What kind of tests should I undergo to determine the cause of this phenomenon?
Eric, 20~29 year old female. Ask Date: 2010/10/06

Hello, based on your description, it seems like you are experiencing paroxysmal arrhythmia, which is likely benign.
I recommend that you visit a cardiology clinic nearby to arrange for a 24-hour Holter monitor test.

More Info
Heart palpitations can be concerning, especially when they occur after intense physical activity or when they are accompanied by other symptoms such as shortness of breath. It’s important to understand the nature of palpitations and when they warrant medical attention.
Understanding Heart Palpitations
Palpitations are sensations that feel like your heart is pounding, fluttering, or beating irregularly. They can occur in a variety of situations, including during exercise, at rest, or during periods of stress. While palpitations are often benign and can be caused by factors such as anxiety, caffeine intake, or dehydration, they can also indicate underlying heart conditions, especially if they are frequent or accompanied by other symptoms.
When to Seek Medical Attention
You should seek medical attention if you experience any of the following alongside your palpitations:
1. Chest Pain or Discomfort: This could indicate a heart issue and should be evaluated immediately.
2. Shortness of Breath: If you find it difficult to breathe, especially if it occurs suddenly or is severe.
3. Dizziness or Lightheadedness: This could suggest that your heart is not pumping effectively.
4. Fainting or Near-Fainting: Loss of consciousness or feeling faint can be serious.
5. Palpitations Associated with Other Symptoms: If your palpitations are accompanied by sweating, nausea, or a feeling of impending doom.
Given your description of palpitations occurring after intense exercise and now at rest, along with the sensation of your heart "stopping" for a few beats, it is advisable to consult a healthcare professional.
Recommended Evaluations
To determine the cause of your palpitations, your doctor may recommend several evaluations:
1. Electrocardiogram (ECG): This test records the electrical activity of your heart and can help identify arrhythmias or other heart conditions.
2. Holter Monitor: This portable ECG device is worn for 24-48 hours to capture your heart's rhythm during normal activities.
3. Echocardiogram: An ultrasound of the heart can assess its structure and function, helping to identify any underlying issues.
4. Exercise Stress Test: This test evaluates how your heart performs under physical stress and can help identify exercise-induced arrhythmias.
5. Blood Tests: These can check for electrolyte imbalances, thyroid function, and other factors that might contribute to palpitations.
Conclusion
While palpitations can be benign, your symptoms suggest that further evaluation is warranted. It’s essential to discuss your symptoms with a healthcare provider who can perform the necessary tests to rule out any serious conditions. Early diagnosis and management can help prevent potential complications and provide peace of mind. If you experience any alarming symptoms, do not hesitate to seek immediate medical attention.
