Intermittent sharp pain in the lower abdomen and chest?

Recently, I have been experiencing intermittent sharp pain in the lower left abdomen, approximately 12 to 13 centimeters below the navel.
The pain occurs at various times, including during work hours in the afternoon and at night, waking me from sleep.
Additionally, I have similar intermittent sharp pain in the center of my chest (at the midpoint of the line connecting the nipples), mostly occurring while I am in the office during the day.
The pain usually lasts for a few moments and resolves on its own, and it does not always accompany palpitations.
Which medical specialties should I consult for relevant examinations? Thank you.

More Info

When experiencing intermittent abdominal and chest pain, especially in the context of your description, it is crucial to approach the situation with caution and seek appropriate medical attention. Given your symptoms, which include left lower abdominal pain and central chest pain, it is advisable to consult with multiple specialists to rule out various potential causes.

Abdominal Pain
The left lower abdominal pain you described could be attributed to several conditions. Common causes include:
1. Gastrointestinal Issues: Conditions such as diverticulitis, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), or even constipation can lead to localized pain in the lower abdomen. Given your age and the intermittent nature of the pain, it would be prudent to consult a gastroenterologist. They may recommend imaging studies such as an abdominal ultrasound or CT scan, as well as laboratory tests to assess for inflammation or infection.

2. Urological Concerns: Since the pain is located in the lower abdomen, it could also be related to the urinary tract. A urologist can evaluate for conditions such as urinary tract infections or kidney stones, which can sometimes present with abdominal pain.

3. Gynecological Issues: In females, conditions such as ovarian cysts, endometriosis, or other gynecological disorders could manifest as lower abdominal pain. A visit to a gynecologist may be warranted to rule out these possibilities, especially if you have any menstrual irregularities or other related symptoms.

Chest Pain
The central chest pain you are experiencing could be indicative of several issues, some of which may require immediate attention:
1. Cardiac Concerns: Although you mentioned that the pain does not always accompany palpitations, it is essential to rule out any cardiac issues, especially given the location of the pain. A cardiologist can perform an electrocardiogram (ECG) and possibly a stress test or echocardiogram to assess your heart's health.

2. Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease (GERD): Sometimes, abdominal issues can manifest as chest pain due to acid reflux. A gastroenterologist can evaluate this possibility and recommend appropriate treatment.

3. Musculoskeletal Issues: Chest pain can also arise from muscle strain or rib issues, particularly if you have been engaging in physical activities that may have strained your chest muscles. A primary care physician or an orthopedic specialist can help assess this.

When to Seek Help
You should seek medical help if:
- The pain becomes severe or persistent.

- You experience additional symptoms such as shortness of breath, dizziness, or sweating.

- There are changes in bowel or urinary habits.

- You have a history of heart disease or risk factors such as high blood pressure, diabetes, or smoking.

Recommended Steps
1. Primary Care Physician: Start with a visit to your primary care physician, who can perform an initial evaluation and guide you on which specialists to see based on your symptoms.

2. Gastroenterologist: For the abdominal pain, especially if it persists or worsens.

3. Cardiologist: For the chest pain, particularly if it is recurrent or associated with other concerning symptoms.

4. Gynecologist/Urologist: Depending on your gender and specific symptoms, these specialists can help rule out reproductive or urinary tract issues.

Conclusion
In summary, your symptoms warrant a thorough evaluation by multiple specialists to ensure that any serious conditions are ruled out. Early intervention is key to managing potential health issues effectively. Always prioritize your health and do not hesitate to seek medical attention when experiencing concerning symptoms.
