Issues related to denture restoration?
Hello Dr.
Huang! I would like to ask you about a denture repair issue.
Recently, my mother's denture accidentally fell to the ground and broke into two pieces (#4 and #5).
Fortunately, the fracture surfaces are smooth (#1), and the two pieces fit together quite well (#2 and #3).
Some have suggested using a good 3M adhesive to bond them, which sounds feasible, but I still have some doubts, so I visited a nearby dental clinic for advice.
However, the receptionist emphasized that my mother needs to be examined by the dentist in person, and that an impression of her lower jaw must be taken to ensure that the repaired denture fits properly without any irregularities.
While the receptionist had good intentions, my mother's actual situation makes it difficult for her to cooperate, as she is over ninety years old and has severe dementia.
She currently resides in a nursing facility, and due to her fluctuating emotional state and heart issues that affect her mobility, getting her to comply with a dental examination is quite challenging.
Moreover, she has been wearing this denture for several decades, and even before the break, it was already somewhat loose.
Now we want to repair this denture, hoping to slightly improve her chewing function while not demanding a perfect fit.
Therefore, my simple inquiries are: (1) Is it possible for a dentist to bond the broken denture together using their professional skills? (2) If it can be bonded, approximately how much would it cost? (3) Are there any clinics in Taipei that provide denture repair services? Since I cannot send the images as attachments, please check the photos I have stored on my Hinet Xuite blog:

Thank you! Wishing you peace! Mr.

Dr. Huang Zhicheng reply Dentistry
Dear Mr.
Chen,
Hello.
Based on the attached photos, it appears that achieving a proper fit is quite challenging due to the narrow shape of the mandible and the small contact area, which may not provide sufficient stability.
However, if you wish to proceed with the reattachment, please have the original technician bond the two fractured pieces together.
Then, support the upper part with a framework to create a tissue-side model, and follow the post-repair steps for the denture to heat-cure and pressure-cast the resin.
This may be worth trying, with an estimated cost of around 4,000 to 5,000 NT dollars.
Wishing you peace and health.
Sincerely,
Dr.

Dear 陳先生,
Thank you for reaching out with your concerns regarding your mother's broken dentures. I understand how distressing this situation can be, especially considering her age and health conditions. Let’s address your questions one by one.
1. Can a dentist professionally repair the broken dentures?
Yes, a dentist can repair broken dentures, especially if the break is clean and the pieces fit together well, as you described. The process typically involves using dental adhesives or, in some cases, creating a new mold to ensure a proper fit. However, the effectiveness of the repair largely depends on the extent of the damage and the condition of the dentures overall. Given that your mother has been using these dentures for many years and they have become loose, it may be beneficial to consider a more comprehensive solution, such as relining or even replacing them, if feasible.
2. What is the estimated cost for the repair?
The cost of repairing dentures can vary widely based on the complexity of the repair and the materials used. Generally, you might expect to pay between $100 to $500 for a simple repair. If the dentist needs to create a new mold or if additional adjustments are required, the cost could increase. It’s best to consult with a local dentist for a precise estimate after they assess the dentures.
3. Where can I find dental clinics in Taipei that offer denture repair services?
In Taipei, there are numerous dental clinics that provide denture repair services. I recommend searching for dental clinics that specialize in prosthodontics, as they focus on the restoration and replacement of teeth, including dentures. You can also check online reviews or ask for recommendations from friends or family. Additionally, contacting local dental schools may provide options for affordable services, as they often have clinics where students perform procedures under professional supervision.
Additional Considerations:
Given your mother's advanced age and health issues, including dementia and mobility challenges, it’s crucial to approach this situation with care. If she is unable to cooperate fully during a dental visit, you might want to discuss with the dentist the possibility of a home visit or a more accommodating appointment schedule. Some dentists specialize in geriatric care and may have experience working with patients who have similar challenges.
Moreover, while using a strong adhesive like 3M may seem like a quick fix, it is not advisable for long-term use as it may not provide the necessary support and could lead to further complications. Professional repair ensures that the dentures are safe to use and will not cause discomfort or harm to your mother’s gums.
In conclusion, while it is possible to repair the dentures, considering your mother's overall health and the condition of the dentures, it may be worthwhile to explore all options with a dental professional. I wish you and your mother the best in resolving this issue, and I hope she finds comfort and ease in her eating and daily activities soon.
Best regards,
