Abnormal bleeding
In the one or two days before menstruation, the flow is very light and bright red.
After menstruation ends, there is still some light bleeding, but it remains bright red.
There are no discomforts in the body (no pain or itching).
Is this normal? I am 35 years old and this is the first time I have encountered this situation; my periods have always been regular before.
Thank you.

Abnormal bleeding can be a concerning issue for many women, and understanding the nuances of your menstrual cycle is crucial in determining whether what you're experiencing is normal or requires further investigation. Based on your description, you are experiencing light bleeding that is bright red in color both before your period and after it has officially ended. While it's good that you are not experiencing any pain or discomfort, there are several factors to consider regarding your menstrual health.
First, it’s important to understand the typical menstrual cycle. A normal cycle can range from 21 to 35 days, with bleeding lasting anywhere from 2 to 7 days. The flow can vary from light to heavy, and it’s not uncommon for women to experience some irregularities throughout their reproductive years. However, any significant changes in your menstrual pattern, especially if they are new to you, should be evaluated.
The light bleeding you are experiencing could be attributed to several factors:
1. Hormonal Fluctuations: Hormonal imbalances can lead to changes in your menstrual cycle. This can be due to various reasons, including stress, changes in weight, or even lifestyle changes. Hormones like estrogen and progesterone play a significant role in regulating your cycle, and any fluctuations can lead to unexpected bleeding.
2. Ovulation Bleeding: Some women experience light spotting around the time of ovulation, typically occurring mid-cycle. This is usually light and short-lived, but it can sometimes be confused with the start of a menstrual period.
3. Implantation Bleeding: If there is a possibility of pregnancy, light bleeding can occur when a fertilized egg implants itself into the uterine lining. This is usually lighter than a regular period and occurs around the time your period would be expected.
4. Uterine Polyps or Fibroids: These benign growths in the uterus can cause irregular bleeding. They are often asymptomatic but can lead to changes in your menstrual flow.
5. Infections or Other Medical Conditions: Although you mentioned no discomfort, infections or conditions such as endometriosis can sometimes present with abnormal bleeding patterns.
Given that you are 35 years old and this is the first time you have experienced such a situation, it is advisable to consult with a healthcare provider. They may recommend a pelvic exam, ultrasound, or hormonal testing to rule out any underlying conditions.
In conclusion, while occasional light bleeding can be normal, especially if it is not accompanied by other symptoms, any significant changes in your menstrual cycle should be evaluated by a healthcare professional. Keeping a record of your menstrual cycle, including the timing, duration, and flow of your periods, can be helpful information to share with your doctor. This will assist them in making an accurate diagnosis and determining the best course of action for your health. Remember, it’s always better to err on the side of caution when it comes to your reproductive health.
